38 St Giles

Norwich, East Anglia

Eating

The breakfast at 38 St Giles is an absolute treat so our advice is sleep late and come down hungry. There's a full range of organic cereals and yogurts, along with berries and local honey complete with its comb. Then, tuck into fresh croissants and just-squeezed OJ while you deliberate over the cooked options.

The porridge with caramelised apple was superb; so too were the poached eggs with wilted spinach on sourdough bread. If we'd been staying 2 nights, we'd have tried the buttermilk pancakes with Norfolk bacon and the classic smoked salmon with scrambled eggs. For purists, there's a Full English option.

Light suppers are available in-room Sun-Thurs, but with so many great restaurants on your doorstep, we'd advise going out for lunch and dinner. Recommended is The Vine for Thai, The Library for Sunday lunch, Tolero for great tapas and a Saturday-night atmosphere, or the hip By Appointment for something special.

Save to favouritesPrintMail38 St GilesJan and William Cheeseman's reputation for hospitality goes before them at this delightful boutique B&B in the heart of Norwich. Formerly owners of a string of delis and cafes, they sold everything to buy 38 St Giles, then a rundown Georgian townhouse, and William spent a year painstakingly restoring it to its former glory. From the elegant balustrade down to the gleaming wooden floors and up to the elaborate ceiling cornices, it's exquisite throughout. And it's now run as a guesthouse by Jan, whose effusive warmth spills over from the moment she hops into your car to direct you to their hidden carpark. 'I feel like the custodian of this beautiful house,' she confided as we peeked in each of the 5 [r:UK080:bedrooms] (all different, all delightful), and admired heavy chandeliers, stain-glass windows and local art. But after delivering a tray of homemade cake and coffee to our room as a welcome, this custodian then gave us a front-door key and it felt more like home than hotel. One of our favourite-ever finds.
