Press Reviews

Conde Nast Traveller (UK), May 2010
"Owners Jan and William Cheeseman are self-effacing about their B&B in the heart of this historic city. But the interiors, designed by William, have featured in a David Linley book, and Jan's finger is on the art-world pulse. Works by Belynda Sharples, Rosie Greenhalgh and photographer Steve Taylor add a contemporary dash to the five elegant rooms in this 17th-century townhouse (built by the family that founded Barclays Bank)."

The Guardian, August 2009
"My bedroom (one of five) at the top is caressed by the evening breeze through the open window. Soft blue walls rub shoulders with dark oyster silk at the windows. An authentic Chinese wardrobe stands on one side of a chimney breast, a high-tech Bang and Olufsen television on the other, and a vintage wing armchair has been revitalised with a bold bird print.

In bed, I feel as though I'm cocooned in a cloud (and, had I not woken up starving, it's likely that I'd still be in it now). If traffic noise disturbs you, you'll need a rear room - but I like the contrast of a busy street and the sense of sanctuary within. Breakfast is a pure unadulterated joy."

  • “Warm welcome, room upgraded to lovely brown room, excellent breakfast, lovely stay.”
    Catherine, United Kingdom (04.05.12)

  • “The welcome from Jan Cheeseman couldn't have been warmer; nothing was too much trouble.
We enjoyed St John's Restaurant and the day's visit to Ranworth and the boat trip around Ranworth Broad which was fabulous, as was the trip to Horsey Wind Pump, not for the pump, but for the walk out to the beach to see about 50 seals sunbathing! A brilliant day out.”
    Una, United Kingdom (03.09.11)

  • “We loved our stay. The room was beautiful, the bed very comfy, and Jan was really welcoming.”
    Liz, United Kingdom (24.07.11)

  • “Breakfast was lovely. And tea and cake on arrival. They recommended a restaurant which was very nice, called the Iron House.”
    Francesca, United Kingdom (24.07.11)

Save to favouritesPrintMail38 St GilesJan and William Cheeseman's reputation for hospitality goes before them at this delightful boutique B&B in the heart of Norwich. Formerly owners of a string of delis and cafes, they sold everything to buy 38 St Giles, then a rundown Georgian townhouse, and William spent a year painstakingly restoring it to its former glory. From the elegant balustrade down to the gleaming wooden floors and up to the elaborate ceiling cornices, it's exquisite throughout. And it's now run as a guesthouse by Jan, whose effusive warmth spills over from the moment she hops into your car to direct you to their hidden carpark. 'I feel like the custodian of this beautiful house,' she confided as we peeked in each of the 5 [r:UK080:bedrooms] (all different, all delightful), and admired heavy chandeliers, stain-glass windows and local art. But after delivering a tray of homemade cake and coffee to our room as a welcome, this custodian then gave us a front-door key and it felt more like home than hotel. One of our favourite-ever finds.
