Porto, Portugal

Light, bright and stylish B&B in the centre of Porto, walking distance from all the major sights

In Porto's slightly rundown Ribeira area, this gem of a guesthouse really stands out. Originally a private mansion, it has been converted into a bright, stylish B&B with modern furnishings, a super-sociable bar and 6 light, colourful rooms.

We haven't visited yet, but feedback suggests it's ideal for citybreak fans who like style and design. It ticks all the boxes for a Porto minibreak, not least because it's walking distance from all the major sites, including excellent nightlife (the National Theatre S João is very close), and not far from the city's port lodges and Rem Koolhaas' futuristic masterpiece, the Casa da Musica.

Aside from the bright modern design, what sets it apart is the warm welcome you'll receive from the owners. If you need recommendations on sightseeing, a restaurant reservation or someone to offer advice about any aspect of the city, Mariana and Pedro are always happy to oblige. And they and their team serve up a delicious breakfast of warm croissants with pumpkin and tomato jam, homemade cakes and good coffee.

Highs

  • Great location close to the metro and bus station, and an easy walk from most sights, including the funicular
  • Mariana and Pedro, the helpful owners, greet you with a delicious glass of port when you arrive
  • Calm, simple furnishings and a modern, sun-dappled garden
  • Rooms have lovely floor-to-ceiling French windows and small Juliet balconies
  • Customer service is faultless - the staff act as a general concierge service

Lows

  • Can be tricky to find - there's no sign outside
  • It's on the simple side - no TV or minibar in rooms
  • The surrounding area is a little rundown
  • It's an old building and sound can carry
  • Rooms at the front of the house may experience road noise

A cozy guesthouse just off the beaten track in the city center...
