A CORNER OF EDEN - REVIEW

The Cumbrian Fells are wild, windswept and beautiful. Dry stone walls parcel up the fields, snaking up fells to thwart roaming sheep. Tucked away at the end of a leafy lane, A Corner of Eden is a fetching Georgian farmhouse, built to gentrify an ancient rustic homestead. It’s hard to believe that in 2006 this building was derelict. Owners Debbie Temple and Richard Greaves have restored it to a tee, creating a stylish, comfortable and lavish piece of Grade II-listed heaven. Damask-covered sofas, Persian rugs, and the rich hues of mahogany and silk evoke Georgian sophistication. The house is decorated and run with a love and attention to detail that makes you feel instantly at home.

You can book one of the 4 cosy bedrooms for a romantic escape (though, given the shared bathrooms, that's perhaps not ideal); much better to take the whole house for a (large) family break or a weekend celebration with up to 8 friends. Log fires, skies full of stars, velvety nights, home-cooked food to order - all the ingredients are in place for an enchanting escape.

HIGHS

  • A beautiful rural setting, with the Howgills and Wild Boar Fell on your doorstep
  • The term ‘luxury B&B’ is more about touchy-feely extras like candles, smellies and fine bedding rather than TVs, DVDs, phones etc
  • The Butler’s Pantry, stocked with fantastic food and drink is yours to raid, day or night
  • Debbie and Richard are thoughtful, friendly hosts, and great chefs
  LOWS

  • Plug-in air fresheners are dotted around the house. But it’s the work of an instant to unplug them and enjoy the fresh Cumbrian air
  • If you book the whole house, you don't get use of the kitchen - but that's no bad thing with such good chefs hosting you
  • Dinners are currently only available at weekends, but the Butler’s Pantry and local pub plug any gaps
