Conde Nast Traveller (UK), May 2011
"The owner, Zeina Aboukheir, has collected antiques for more than
40 years: doors from Damascus, columns from Cairo - incredible! The
hotel is quite isolated, in eight hectares of garden, so there's no
noise. The Italian and Lebanese food is delicious. Plus, this is
where all the archaeologists go."
The Guardian, July 2010
"Al Moudira is not simply the best hotel in Luxor, it's one of the
best in Egypt – an architectural pleasure dome of vaulted
ceilings, pharaonic murals, wooden latticework and regal arches. It
appears to be ancient, but it's not yet 10 years old – a
decade ago, there was nothing but sand here. The 40 rooms range
from huge to huger – expect high domed ceilings, crisp white
linen, beautiful tiles and warm colours."
The Telegraph, August 2009
"A maze of arches, domed ceilings, columns, hidden courtyards and
bougainvillea-draped loggias – along with exquisitely
carved-wood, gold-flecked and frescoed walls, stained-glass
windows, Arabian antiquities and gurgling fountains: you could be
forgiven for thinking you'd washed up at the home of an ancient
Arabian prince."
Travel + Leisure
"A baroque hotel fit for royalty. Incorporates materials salvaged
from the corners of Egypt: stained glass lines the ceilings;
frescoes and latticework adorn the arched walls; and 100-year-old
wooden columns surround the swimming pool. The air is fragrant with
henna and jasmine, wafting from a 20-acre garden planted with
lemon, mandarin, and guava trees."
Frommer's
"A lovingly put together boutique hotel on the edge of the desert.
The individually designed and decorated rooms are spread through a
splendidly understated garden, and the pool is a tranquil work of
art. The food, though, tops it all."

“Wonderful architecture especially the patio; nice garden.”
Hans Joachim, Germany (25.03.12)“The hotel is lovely and has such a laid back charming atmosphere, and rooms are great. The waiters are delightful and friendly. Food in the area is pretty terrible everywhere. Which makes the hotel's food seem a bit better than it is...
Wonderful to go to see some of the sights at odd times of day and see them with no one there (the Ramesseum, the Valley of the Nobles, Medinet Habu).”
Juliet, United Kingdom (04.01.12)“We liked the waiting staff, who were very attentive & friendly. Christmas Eve Gala Dinner original & enjoyable. Poor provision of massage/spa treatments and almost total absence of Egyptian/Middle Eastern dishes on menu. Limited wine list & cocktails not great.”
Joseph, United Kingdom (26.12.11)“Our hotel Al Moudira was fun and different - perhaps a little far out of Luxor but none the worse for that - we would recommend it. A tip for travellers in Egypt is to find an unofficial 'agent' at each town or centre who will deal with all taxis, transfers, site visits and other potential hassle sites. It is money very well spent.”
Sally, United Kingdom (21.11.11)“This hotel is exactly what we wanted even if it was remote from Luxor (ie NO HASSLE!). The building and rooms are in a Moorish style. Zeina Aboukheir is Lebanese and so the food is delicious. The staff are helpful and their nominated taxi driver Ahmed Badwy Galal spoke good English and was well informed about all the historical sights. The ferry to Luxor city was available 24 hours and regular but it was good to return to our hotel after the noise and hassle of Luxor.”
Miles, United Kingdom (21.11.11)“Al Moudira was one of the most visually beautiful hotels we have ever stayed in. The rooms were great and we were very comfortable - the only thing missing was the facility for an early cup of tea, and we were provided with a kettle immediately. The food was excellent, and there were always Lebanese and Egyptian dishes on the menu, which we particularly enjoyed. As there were very few other guests we had the gorgeous (and very warm) pool to ourselves most of the time. The lunch bar by the pool served delicious salads and snacks, and by the end of our stay we had tried everything on the menu! We went to Luxor a few times, and this worked well with a local driver (very reasonable) who took us to the ferry which went over to the east bank where the museums and historic sites are. We found a great restaurant for lunch called Sofra in Luxor, but the evenings are more difficult - we had drinks early evening and then caught the ferry back to where our driver was waiting. I think most tourists had the evening meal in their hotel. We girls found the souks very difficult and annoying as the sellers see nothing wrong with bothering you and pulling you into their shops if you dare to stop and look at anything - the problem is that they are all selling the same stuff and there is so much competition between them.
Hopefully, the situation will soon be resolved and people will want to go to Egypt again. We have already recommended ~Al Moudira to many of our friends.”
berenice, United Kingdom (19.01.11)“Very nice hotel, lovely owners and Christmas party. Suggest better reading lights for bed, common issue for me in older hotels”
Allan, United States (25.12.10)“The hotel is beautifully designed and the rooms and grounds are generously proportioned. The staff are very welcoming and friendly. The review accurately describes the experience.”
Claire, United Kingdom (11.10.10)“The ambience, peace, pool, architecture, food and rooms were wonderful. So, too the lack of hassle, friendliness of the staff and the reliable taxi company they use.
The location was not ideal - nothing around about to visit and nowhere to eat out in the vicinity and 20 minutes by taxi from the West Bank sites. Having said that, the benefits far outweighed the disadvantage of location.
Make sure you book a taxi with the hotel for an airport transfer on your arrival as the hotel is not easy to find.”
Rita, United Kingdom (20.09.10)
