Eating

The modern guest kitchen is fitted with wooden cupboards, a large fridge-freezer, electric hot rings (no oven), an earthen jar to keep spring water cool, a table for 6, crockery and cutlery for 10 people. There is also a washing machine and an electric kettle.

Breakfast and dinner are available by prior arrangement, though we have not tried them. Meals are served in the kitchen, or the terrace or (for large groups) in the seminar-room. The cuisine is local with a touch of Indian, meaning that vegetarians are well catered for. Some of the ingredients come from the garden; most are organic.

Most people make their own breakfast, and head off to Paleochora (5km) for dinner – there’s a huge choice of friendly, well-priced tavernas. Our favourites are:

  • Aposperida, at the northern end of the main street, for Maro's kalitsounia (spinach and cheese pies), piperies florinis (roast red peppers) melitzanosalata (aubergine dip) and rabbit stifado, plus a tasty semolina halva for dessert
  • Grameno, 15 minutes drive outside Paleochora towards Koundouri, offering authentic Cretan dishes: exotically prepared snails, juicy moussaka, freshly picked wild greens
  • Rena’s Garden, just off the main street: a small, friendly place definitely worth a visit
  • Caravella, near the harbour, has a good reputation for fish
  • The Third Eye for veggie dishes

Many places along the main street and the seafront offer good breakfasts with fresh orange juice, yoghurt, omelettes, even an avocado salad. There is a good family-owned supermarket with fresh fruit and vegetable on the western beach, and an excellent bakery/patisserie just above the harbour.

If you don’t have transport, Anidri village has a simple taverna serving snacks and some traditional dishes on its charming terrace.

Save to favouritesPrintMailAnidri Eco-cottagesFrom the moment you awake to the tinkling of goatbells and the buzzing of cicadas, you know it’s going to be a good day. Step barefoot onto the sunwarmed terrace in this rock-cocooned valley: a gentle breeze, bright blue skies, endless olive trees, no traffic. Surely this is how Nature intended us to live? Mario Sommer, the German-born engineer-turned-healer who designed and built this eco-retreat on Crete’s south coast, would agree. Leaving behind Berlin city life, he moved to the laid-back resort of Paleochora in 1991, started a small café and gave tajijua lessons, all the while dreaming of a place where people from different backgrounds could unwind and exchange ideas in simple, natural surroundings. Slowly, the dream became reality. Land was bought in the fertile hills near Anidri, 5km inland, and a pair of eco-friendly three-bedroom guesthouses and a hi-tech seminar room built. Then he opened the doors to friends and guests seeking beauty and inspiration away from Crete’s resorts, but not far from some of her most pristine beaches and dramatic mountains.
