Anidri Eco-cottages
near Paleochora, Crete
Eating
The modern guest kitchen is fitted with wooden cupboards, a
large fridge-freezer, electric hot rings (no oven), an earthen jar
to keep spring water cool, a table for 6, crockery and cutlery for
10 people. There is also a washing machine and an electric
kettle.
Breakfast and dinner are available by prior arrangement,
though we have not tried them. Meals are served in the kitchen, or
the terrace or (for large groups) in the seminar-room. The cuisine
is local with a touch of Indian, meaning that vegetarians are well
catered for. Some of the ingredients come from the garden; most are
organic.
Most people make their own breakfast, and head off to
Paleochora (5km) for dinner – there’s a huge
choice of friendly, well-priced tavernas. Our favourites are:
- Aposperida, at the northern end of the main street, for
Maro's kalitsounia (spinach and cheese pies), piperies
florinis (roast red peppers) melitzanosalata (aubergine
dip) and rabbit stifado, plus a tasty semolina halva
for dessert
- Grameno, 15 minutes drive outside Paleochora towards
Koundouri, offering authentic Cretan dishes: exotically prepared
snails, juicy moussaka, freshly picked wild
greens
- Rena’s Garden, just off the main street: a small,
friendly place definitely worth a visit
- Caravella, near the harbour, has a good reputation for
fish
- The Third Eye for veggie dishes
Many places along the main street and the seafront offer good breakfasts with fresh orange juice, yoghurt, omelettes, even an avocado salad. There is a good family-owned supermarket with fresh fruit and vegetable on the western beach, and an excellent bakery/patisserie just above the harbour.
If you don’t have transport, Anidri village has a simple taverna serving snacks and some traditional dishes on its charming terrace.
