Conde Nast Traveller
"Bloomestate offers you a luxury environment with all the comfort you could wish. A high standard of individual service and sufficient privacy is offered... Bloomestate will be the ideal stopover halfway from Cape Town to the Garden Route. It is also a comfortable base from which you can explore the area, with so much to offer that you might decide to stay an extra night or two."

Frommer's
"Bloomestate will suit travelers who prefer contemporary design - even the banana trees sprouting outside make a change from the ubiquitous oaks everywhere else. The two sets of rooms - modern, with furniture by some interesting designers and MP3 docking stations - open onto landscaped gardens, a heated saltwater pool and a Jacuzzi perched above a pond thick with lily pads."

Elle Magazine

  • “The really oustanding feature of Bloomestate are the amazing grounds, which includes a lily pond and a citrus orchard. The rooms are certainly Zen-like in their simplicity but they're spacious and the bathroom is also a good size if a little clinical. We missed a decent sitting area outside our room (a table and chairs could be added quite easily), but there's a superb lounge/bar area with outside space for use by guests. The swimming pool and sun loungers are excellent. Breakfast is served by the owners, Carla and Maarten, themselves and it's of a very high standard with something different every day. Carla and Maarten have clearly invested a lot of thought in the design and running of Bloomestate and it shows.”

  • “Very modern place to stay with large gardens including citrus groves and large pond. Lots of interesting bird life. Everything within walking distance but the owners insist on taking you to restaurant which is typical of the thoughtful standard of their service. Bed very bouncy in Autumn (room name) so if you have a restless partner suggest you ask for twins. Also if a light sleeper you may need earplugs; you can hear the road. We found the pool cool in mid December. Breakfast were delightful, lots of choice and available over a good length of time. We also had two excellent massages. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would return.”

Save to favouritesPrintMailBloomestateMidway between Cape Town and Plettenberg Bay, Swellendam is a natural place to break up your journey along the Garden Route. This sleepy town in the foothills of the Langeberg Mountains has some of South Africa’s finest Cape Dutch architecture, and the surrounding hillsides are home to some of the country's best preserved fynbos. Bloomestate is tucked away behind high walls in a quiet leafy suburb, whose peacefulness it shares. The layout of its 4 low, modern buildings, separated by neatly cut lawns, towering trees and beds of lavender, was inspired by the low, sober lines of classic Cape Dutch architecture. But its design and décor represent a complete break with tradition: the best of Noughties design with a big twist of Zen minimalism. Every corner of its colourful [r:SA075:guest bedrooms] and gardens has been conceived with maximum aesthetic appeal in mind, and Carla and Maarten’s fusion of state-of-the art fittings and contemporary furnishings is as remarkable as it is original.
