Borgo Santo Pietro
Palazzetto, near Siena, Italy
Press Reviews
Conde Nast Traveller (UK), August 2010
"It's rare to come across a hotel that gets it right in just about
every department. Danish Italophiles Claus and Jeanette Throttrup
bought 13th-century Borgo Santo Pietro as a derelict villa in 2001.
Jeanette searched antique markets all over Europe to create the
illusion of a house lived in by generations of aristocratic
globetrotters. The curtains and bedcovers are made from silks by
Fortuny and Rubelli; blocks of antique marble have become bathroom
worktops; and the flagstones in the entrance hall came from a
French castle (large boulders were rolled across the floor to
'weather' them). The effect is opulent, stylish and just a little
bit eccentric."
Conde Nast Traveler (US), 2009 Hot List
"The Sienese monks who stopped at the Borgo Santo Pietro more than
800 years ago wouldn't recognize the place today. Danish owners
Claus and Jeanette Thottrup have rebuilt the old stone exteriors
and added chandeliers and beautiful trompe l'oeils... The effect is
elegant, with useful modern touches: oil paintings open to reveal
flat-screen TVs, an extensive DVD library is on hand, and claw-foot
tubs look plucked from an Italian castle. Rose-lined pathways lead
to secluded benches, a lovely orto (vegetable garden) that provides
the restaurant with its greens, and just-planted fruit
orchards."
The Independent, August 2009
"Radiating elegance and comfort, the hotel... is the result of an
eight-year labour of love on behalf of owners Jeanette and Claus
Thottrup. They bought the house to live in, but soon decided that
it was far too special to keep to themselves. A meticulous
restoration has subsequently transformed the property into a
country-house style retreat with seven bedrooms, a spa, a
freshwater infinity swimming pool and 13 acres of mature Tuscan
gardens - all surrounded by inspiring views of the
countryside."
Travel + Leisure
"Antiques and hand-painted murals accent the 11 unique rooms at
this retreat, originally built in the early 13th century. The
produce from its extensive gardens goes straight into the on-site
restaurant - evidence of Tuscany's farm-to-table trend."
Conde Nast Traveler (US), Hot List Spas 2009
"Tucked away in an annex that housed the long-abandoned hamlet's
bakery, the spa at Tuscany's Borgo Santo Pietro is a single
palatial treatment room that mirrors the hotel's ethos of making
each visitor feel as if the property is his own domain. Despite the
cozy digs, the menu of treatments is expansive and the prices
reasonable. Among the options: a skin resonance facial that tackles
sensitive skin; an eye "supreme" which promises to rectify
puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles; and a cranial-sacral
treatment (book a day in advance) that helps with headaches and
tension. Beautiful design details like exposed brick walls, vaulted
painted ceilings, Gothic-like candelabras, and a fireplace keep one
aesthetically pleased while being pampered."
Conde Nast Traveller (UK), Hot List 2009
"Few Italian hotels manage to recreate the ambience of a cultured
house party as effectively as Borgo Santo Pietro... It feels like a
friend's home, even though there's a full range of hotel services,
from a gourmet restaurant to pre-loaded iPods and a well-equipped
spa. The owners commissioned artisans and combed antique markets to
create the illusion of a house that has been lived in by
generations of aristocratic globetrotters. The bedrooms have
brocade bedspreads, marble fireplaces, Murano chandeliers and
claw-footed bathtubs, and the common areas are also richly
decorated. The 12-acre grounds are divided into a rose walk, a
playground, tennis courts, vegetable and herb gardens and a natural
pool (with bar)."
The Sunday Times Travel Magazine, November 2008
"This new spa... is a novelty: a one-room rustic idyll that
dispenses trance-inducing Shiatsu and facials at the hands of two
experienced therapists, using organic Comfort Zone products -
there's even a customised range for men. Owned by two Danes, this
is an eight-bedroom Tuscan classic, with clawfoot baths and
custom-made everything from plates to linen dressing-gowns. It's
all immersed in rose-scented gardens, 35 minutes from Siena. The
organic cuisine has a light touch - as you'll discover with your
first mouthful of the linguine with fried Mediterranean king
prawns. And don't get us started on the chocolate terrine."

“
The location and scenery were beautiful. The gardens were superb and the whole ambiance both in the hotel and in the grounds was very stylish but relaxed. The food was delicious but the portions at dinner were quite small (bearing in mind the cost). The staff were very friendly.”
Rosemary, United Kingdom (08.07.11)“Borgo is beyond fantastic - we loved it!
Evening Restaurant food and wine little pricey, with ambitions of Michelin Stars! But always the option of cosying up in a cubby hole around the grounds and eating off the day menu.
Staff were excellent and nothing was too much. Can't wait to go back one day!!”
