Boskerris Hotel

St Ives, Cornwall

Rooms

There are 15 rooms: 9 standard, 3 superior, a family room, a triple and a 'celebration suite'. All share the same basic style – clean, uncluttered spaces, decorated in shades of vanilla cream, enlivened with panels of colour (candy, chocolate, aquamarine) in patterned headboards, wallpaper and bow-tied silk cushions. All have comfy beds, wicker chairs, groovy glass or ceramic basins and Grohe showers in ensuite bathrooms. There's also plenty of storage space, a make-it-yourself beverage tray with homemade biscuits (if you want fresh milk, just ask), and White Company toiletries. All but 4 of the rooms have sea views.

Standard rooms have conventional baths with overhead showers. Superior rooms have more space and high-spec extras such as goose-down bedding, Pure radios, waffle robes, cafetieres, and large bathrooms with contemporary roll-top tubs and separate walk-in rain showers. The spacious suite, designed for honeymooners and loved-up couples, has snuggly toweling robes, and a sunken corner bath with a sea view.

The family room is actually two adjoining rooms – one of them furnished with a pair of bunk beds.

The owners Jonathan and Marianne Bassett were novices themselves when they planned their escape from London. But they stuck to familiar territory (Jonathan was born in the area); struck lucky when they found a tired hotel perched on a hillside just above Carbis Bay’s white-sand beach; and clearly knew what they were doing when they redesigned the place, and upgraded the service, for its relaunch in 2003. For the ground-floor salon they picked duck egg blue and Designers Guild silks, cream rugs on wood floors, deep damask sofas, piles of books, low-lighting and local art. The dining room has a fresh by-the-sea look with a hint of Provence and the 15 [r:UK031:bedrooms] are pale but interesting, jazzed up with lush fabrics and luxury bathrooms. Best of all, the wide, decked terrace has spectacular sea views – and the whole ensemble is infused with the light that inspired generations of Cornish artists.
