Bosque del Cabo Rainforest Lodge

Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica

A wonderfully rustic lodge with thatched cabins and self-catering villas in the unspoilt Osa Peninsula

Owner Phil Spier arrived from Florida at this spot on the beautiful Osa Peninsula, attracted by the amazing rainforest. His dream was to establish a sustainable organic black pepper farm and rehabilitate the land, but realised such a small scale business needed to diversify so built 3 cabinas. He could little imagine that 20 years later he’d have a successful business attracting guests wanting to chill out amongst the wildlife and enjoy a range of forest-centric activities.

But here, in beautiful tropical gardens elevated above the Pacific, you can choose between cabins, offering simple comforts, or villas, fully equipped for self-catering. Sprawl out on a hammock or rock in the wicker chairs. There are plenty of trails through the lodge’s own reserve to explore the primary and secondary rainforest or reach the beach - and the resident biologist Philip Davison gives a fascinating tour: ‘a 4-hour crash course in tropical ecology’! Don’t expect luxury. Do expect a fantastic laid-back adventure.

Highs

  • Rustic cabins have great Pacific and Golfo Dulce views from their balconies, and outside showers
  • Gorgeous gardens, filled with tropical flowers
  • The chance to really connect with nature and see animals in their habitat: howler and spider monkeys, agoutis, sloths, toucans, macaws, even pumas
  • A range of daily activities, including early morning birdwatching and a sunset reptile tour
  • The opportunity to shut off from the outside world - there's no TV, switch off your mobile phone and unwind
  • Bona fide sustainable tourism and eco-credentials

Lows

  • Sheets can get damp in the green season
  • The cabins’ balconies don’t have railings and some have a big drop - not suitable for small children
  • Extras, such as the transfer from Puerto Jiménez, aren’t included

The property, with acres of animal rich primary forest, has the most beautiful landscaping on the peninsula...
