Brilliant Apartments

Berlin, Germany

Eating

One of the best things about staying here is that you can mix up going out to eat, or staying in and self-catering. Everything has been thought of in the well-equipped kitchens, from a bread basket for your morning Brötchen (bread rolls) to champagne glasses if you have something to celebrate. And of course there’s everything in between, from pots and pans, decent crockery, water filter and a coffee maker. Most apartments have a table and chairs (Jade has high stools); all have a stove top with hobs, a decent-sized fridge and a microwave. There are supermarkets a short walk away where you can buy groceries - a few basics are provided (washing up liquid, salt, pepper, toilet paper), but you will have to stock up on most of the things you need.

However, the location of the apartments in one of Berlin’s main going-out areas makes it tempting to just eat out. The Oderberger Strasse and the nearby Kastanienallee are overflowing with restaurants, with the choice ranging from pizza to Greek, from Thai to Indian. For traditional German food we recommend Prater on the Kastanienallee, which has an enormous, very popular beer garden.

There are several cafés on the street that serve breakfast (a meal taken very seriously in Berlin). But if you don’t want to think in the morning, you can pre-order breakfast at the next-door Ostfee café. Bonanza Coffee Heroes, 2 doors down from the apartments in the other direction also does excellent coffee and croissants.

And there is no better place to experience this than in the Prenzlauer Berg district, with its bohemian atmosphere and thriving café culture. In 2006, former cameraman and bundle of energy Simon Wirth bought a whole apartment block in a typical Altbau (late 19th-century block) on Oderberger Strasse - one of the area’s prettiest streets, choc-a-block with bars, restaurants and boutiques. Some of the apartments were tenanted, 9 were empty, and he's been gradually doing up those ones ever since. Dispersed through the building, some face the road, others the inner courtyard, and your direct neighbour is likely to be a local; Simon also lives here with his wife and 3 children. A mix of studios, 1 bed and 2-4 bed apartments, there's something for everyone (couples, friends, families), and each is fully self-catering and stylishly furnished with a mixture of modern, vintage 70s and antique furniture. Red, yellow or perhaps moss-green sofas provide splashes of bright colour, and matching bulbous lamps or graphic art make them feel contemporary and cool. The 10th Brilliant Apartment ([r:BE007:Jade]) is in a similar Altbau on nearby Rykestrasse, a slightly quieter and very beautiful street. From here it's a short stroll to Kollwitzplatz, where there's a great food and crafts market every Saturday.
