Brilliant Apartments

Berlin, Germany

Kids

The apartments are an ideal base if you are travelling with children. Not only do you have the obvious advantage of being able to self cater, but Prenzlauer Berg is teeming with young families, and the local infrastructure is strongly geared towards their needs. Nearly all the cafés and restaurants are child-friendly and will provide highchairs, and there are playgrounds in abundance.

For rainy days there are two Spielcafes (play cafés) within walking distance – ‘Onkel Alberts’ on Zionskirchstrasse, and the ‘Spielzimmer’ on Schliemannstrasse. The nearby Mauerpark (which is more of a strip of grassland than a park) should be avoided if you have small children, as there are often broken beer bottles left behind from the Sunday revelries (see Activities). However, if you walk through the park there is a playground and petting zoo at the far end.

  • Best for: All ages
  • Family friendly accommodation: All apartments work for families - just add an extra bed or cot. If you want a separate room for you and them, Rubin, Saphir and Smaragd have a big bedroom plus a separate living room. The larger apartments Bernstein and Achat have separate bedrooms and are best for large families. All apartments except Topas have a bathtub.
  • Babysitting: Private English-speaking babysitting is available for around €10/hour via an external agency. Contact the apartments in advance to arrange.
  • Baby equipment:
    • 6 cots
    • Baby bedding
    • High chair
  • Children's meals: The apartments are self catering and have a microwave (but no blender) for baby food. There are plenty of child-orientated cafés nearby as well as takeaways for the nights when you don't want to cook but don't want to eat out.
  • Kids Activities on site:
    • Children's DVDs
  • Kids Activities nearby:
    • Plenty of playgrounds nearby
    • Children's museum Machmit is a 5-minute tram ride away
    • Moritzhof children's farm at the Mauerpark nearby has pony riding and a petting zoo
  • Families Should Know: We don't recommend booking an apartment with a balcony if you have small children, in particular Acha on the 4th floor. Make sure you ask when booking.

Distances:

  • Airport: 20 minutes
  • Doctor: 5 minutes
  • Hospital: 5 minutes
Save to favouritesPrintMailBrilliant ApartmentsPart of Berlin’s special appeal is its energetic, anything-goes vibe. And there is no better place to experience this than in the Prenzlauer Berg district, with its bohemian atmosphere and thriving café culture. In 2006, former cameraman and bundle of energy Simon Wirth bought a whole apartment block in a typical Altbau (late 19th-century block) on Oderberger Strasse - one of the area’s prettiest streets, choc-a-block with bars, restaurants and boutiques. Some of the apartments were tenanted, 9 were empty, and he's been gradually doing up those ones ever since. Dispersed through the building, some face the road, others the inner courtyard, and your direct neighbour is likely to be a local; Simon also lives here with his wife and 3 children. A mix of studios, 1 bed and 2-4 bed apartments, there's something for everyone (couples, friends, families), and each is fully self-catering and stylishly furnished with a mixture of modern, vintage 70s and antique furniture. Red, yellow or perhaps moss-green sofas provide splashes of bright colour, and matching bulbous lamps or graphic art make them feel contemporary and cool. The 10th Brilliant Apartment ([r:BE007:Jade]) is in a similar Altbau on nearby Rykestrasse, a slightly quieter and very beautiful street. From here it's a short stroll to Kollwitzplatz, where there's a great food and crafts market every Saturday.
