Brilliant Apartments

Berlin, Germany

Rooms

The apartments (named after precious stones) are priced according to size and sleep between 2-6 people. All except one (Jade) are located in the same building on the Oderberger Strasse. As is typical in Berlin, the apartment block is made up of a front building facing the street, and a rear building facing the inner courtyard.

There are 3 studios (Opal, Topas and Granat, great for couples), 4 spacious 1-bedroom apartments (Diamant, Rubin, Smaragd and Saphir, ideal for couples and small families) and 2 large 2-bedroom apartments (Achat and Bernstein, for larger families or groups of friends). The 1-bedroom apartments are big enough to comfortably sleep 4 adults (with 2 on a sofabed in the living room), but Diamant is open plan and does not have a door to the bedroom, and in Smaragd and Saphir you have to walk through the living room to reach the bedroom.

Three of the apartments - Diamant, Achat, Bernstein - are in the front building and have balconies; the other apartments are in the rear building, and with the exception of Rubin, which faces south, can be a bit dark if the sun isn’t shining. However, these apartments are surprisingly quiet.

Jade is a studio apartment located on the Rykestrasse in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg (near the Saturday craft market), about a 15-minute walk from its sister apartments.

Owner Simon scoured local design stores, flea markets and antique shops (as well as Ikea) to create the apartments’ distinctive retro-meets-modern look. Wooden floors and white walls are livened up with strips of decorative wallpaper or pieces of bold artwork, and in some of the apartments there are exposed brick walls. Beds are kingsize and extremely comfy; sofas can be made up as additional doubles and extra mattresses and/or baby cots can be provided.

Bathrooms are generally quite small but beautifully decorated, and with the exception of Topas, all have baths with hand-held showers. A hairdryer, soap and shampoo are provided.

All apartments have a radio/CD player and TV (a DVD player can be rented for €1/day), and free WiFi. Diamant has its own washing machine; for the other apartments there is a communal washing machine in the building.

Save to favouritesPrintMailBrilliant ApartmentsPart of Berlin’s special appeal is its energetic, anything-goes vibe. And there is no better place to experience this than in the Prenzlauer Berg district, with its bohemian atmosphere and thriving café culture. In 2006, former cameraman and bundle of energy Simon Wirth bought a whole apartment block in a typical Altbau (late 19th-century block) on Oderberger Strasse - one of the area’s prettiest streets, choc-a-block with bars, restaurants and boutiques. Some of the apartments were tenanted, 9 were empty, and he's been gradually doing up those ones ever since. Dispersed through the building, some face the road, others the inner courtyard, and your direct neighbour is likely to be a local; Simon also lives here with his wife and 3 children. A mix of studios, 1 bed and 2-4 bed apartments, there's something for everyone (couples, friends, families), and each is fully self-catering and stylishly furnished with a mixture of modern, vintage 70s and antique furniture. Red, yellow or perhaps moss-green sofas provide splashes of bright colour, and matching bulbous lamps or graphic art make them feel contemporary and cool. The 10th Brilliant Apartment ([r:BE007:Jade]) is in a similar Altbau on nearby Rykestrasse, a slightly quieter and very beautiful street. From here it's a short stroll to Kollwitzplatz, where there's a great food and crafts market every Saturday.
