Dar Beida

Essaouira, Morocco

Lonely Planet
"If you read the Sunday supplements you'll know that Dar Beida is big news. It's conquered pretty much every style magazine and there's no doubt its crazy, curvaceous, cool interior has the 'wow' factor. With four bedrooms and only two bathrooms however, it's only available for full house rental.

Owners Emma and Graham, designers with an eye for something different, have swept away the usual Moroccan panoply of colour and clutter and opted for retro. Think lurid pop-art: mushroom lamps, moulded plastic chairs, leather poufs, and what are those cow-horn chairs in the terrace room? Depending on your taste you'll either love it or hate it. For a group of friends it's the ultimate party house with a cook and driver on hand. A beer in the bhou (tented sitting area) on the terrace or a lazy afternoon lolling in the hammock after a long day at the beach - what more could you want?"

The Guardian Travel, 30 September 2006
"Not built specifically for surfers - it's a 10 minute walk to the beach - but the 60's vibe at Dar Beida, with its retro furniture and animal skins, is a fitting base for a surf holiday."

The Mail on Sunday, August 2006
"Outside is the hectic bustle and vivid colour of the medina and the souk; inside, a peaceful haven within ancient stone walls. The whiteness inside Dar Beida offers a dramatic backdrop to Emma and Graham's wonderful, eclectic collection of traditional furniture, carpets and artworks which they mix together with European 20th-century classic pieces."

Save to favouritesPrintMailDar BeidaImagine a cross between Barbarella’s boudoir and a swinging 60s love pad and you’ve got a picture of Dar Beida – one of the funkiest spaces we’ve come across in Morocco. The four-[r:MC057:bedroom] house is like a curvy white spaceship with a mix of mod plastic furniture and animal skins and skulls… a pre-historic pop-art cave. An incredibly clean and bright cave, mind you. Owners Emma and Graham deliberately avoided dusty, moody Moorish overtones but hung onto their expertise in retro interior design – the house is filled with groovy 60s finds like mushroom lamps and a Mulberry beanbag chair. Essaouira is an established set for the swords-and-sandals epics that are so popular post-Gladiator so the house is often booked by film folks. Ridley Scott’s DP stayed here when filming 'Kingdom of Heaven', with the town filling in for 12th century Jerusalem. But Dar Beida’s idiosyncratic style is not stiff and formal – it's fine for families and groups of friends. Think the Jetsons á la Maroc and you've got a sense of the fab fusion this house exudes.
