Fazenda da Lagoa
Near Ilheus, Bahia, Brazil
Stunning eco-resort near Ilheus, with miles of pristine white-sand beach backed by 14 colourful cabanas and endless Atlantic rainforest
It's hard to decide what's most appealing about Fazenda da Lagoa.
The virgin white-sand beach, stretching as far as the eye can see?
The majestic Brazilian rainforest, with its glorious green foliage
and exotic birds? The tranquil and remote location, far from the
tourist track and only reachable via a long private drive, followed
by a boat trip? Or the seafood meals, perfect with an icy white
wine and a view of the setting sun? Who knows. Who cares! One thing
is for sure: the combination of all these factors makes for an
unforgettable holiday.
From the moment you're ferried across the private lagoon, past
mangroves and monkeys to the tranquil fazenda (farm), you'll
be smitten. Renowned Carioca artist Mucki Skowronski and her
husband Arthur Bahia have established a wonderfully stylish resort
at the heart of their incredible 300-hectare property. The 14 airy
cabanas offer swathes of bright colour, outdoor showers
and private decks for hammock snoozes. With no neighbours and a
maximum of just 28 guests, it's like a private slice of paradise.

Highs
- It has a fabulous, exclusive location, on the edge of a 7-mile long beach and backed by rainforest
- There's a stylish yet relaxed beach-house feel with vibrantly coloured interiors
- Floor-to-ceiling panels at the front of each spacious cabana, which can be opened to the surroundings or closed for privacy
- Hoist a flag and breakfast is delivered to your terrace, or order a picnic basket for lazy lunches at the magical lagoon
- Older children will love it as the outdoor adventure opportunities are endless (over 8s are welcome, unlike at many Brazilian resorts)
Lows
- If you're after wild Brazilian nightlife, you're in the wrong place. But if tranquil R&R's up your street, you'll be in heaven
- Only the impeccably mannered and thoughtful manager speaks English
- Standard cabanas share a wall and deck with a neighbouring cabana - though this set-up is perfect for families
Fazenda da Lagoa is probably the most beautiful hotel I have ever stayed in...
