Gaia Hotel and Reserve

Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

Rooms

There’s a good spectrum of accommodation within Gaia to suit a range of budgets. Studios are compact (350 sq.ft.), but contain all the features of the larger suites, including kingsize bed, plasma screen etc. There's space for a sofabed, and a table and chairs outside. The newer (and cheaper) Jungle View Studios, up in the hilltop clubhouse, are almost identical in spec - a good option for bargain boutique.

Moving up, the Suites have twice the space, with a living room, dining room and their own private terrace, adorned with little shallow pools for cooling effect (though you can’t get into them). The layout is better, and if you're staying a while we think it’s worth the extra price for the sense of space.

The top-of-the-pile Gaia suite is ideal for celebrations and spoiling yourselves: the sitting room alone could accommodate a handsome-sized suite, with its vast sofas, entertainment centre with giant plasma screen and both DVD and CD players, and a dining area with sliding doors out onto a totally private terrace.

Here you’ll find a swimming pool with spectacular views and floating armchairs; and there are conventional loungers and tables too, for room service lunches and drinks. The bedroom is suitably enormous, with kingsize bed and a huge bathroom: the jacuzzi is a bit difficult to step into, but you’ll have lovely views as you shower.

There are also a pair of 2-bedroom villas which have 2 kingsize bedrooms plus living-dining space for 6, spread over 3 levels. As the hotel is not child-friendly, these are aimed at 2-3 couples or a group of friends travelling together.

Wherever you stay, expect slick slate tile bathrooms, accessed by huge sliding doors, with Aveda toiletries, Jacuzzis (except in Studios) and power showers. Slippers, bathrobes and hairdryers are provided. Beds have high quality bamboo or Egyptian cotton linens, and there are smart wicker and cotton sofas. All rooms have a well-stocked mini bar, plasma screen TV-DVD player (there's a library of DVDs in reception) carefully chosen original paintings and impeccable standards of design.

While most of the country’s hotels survive on kitsch interiors, rice-and-beans cuisine and towels sculpted into swans, Gaia is an oasis of sleek modern design, with a superb spa, and a rooftop [i!http://www.i-escape.com/hotel.php?section=eating&hotel_key=CO013! restaurant] to rival any in New York for the quality of its food and service. There’s a dedicated concierge for each guest, and a wealth of facilities to entertain you after you’ve visited the park. Floors are stone and polished hardwood, furniture is chic minimalist rattan and cream linen, beds are sumptuous, and bathrooms are absolutely state-of-the-art. There are swimming pools with wet bars; the [i!http://www.i-escape.com/hotel.php?section=rooms&hotel_key=CO013#suite!Gaia suite] even has its own pool with a view.
