Garonga Safari Camp
N & NW Province & Mpumalanga, South Africa
Holistic, stylish, heavenly retreat (and safari camp)
Situated on the banks of the Makhutswi River to the west of South
Africa's famous Kruger Park, Garonga is a piece of heaven. From the
moment you are greeted at the huge sculpted gates and admire the
North African-inspired architecture, Garonga’s uniqueness is
tangible. Hot towels refresh you after the dusty drive, and after a
cool passionfruit cocktail you feel life’s pressures melt
away. There’s no urgency to jump in a jeep, hurtle round the
bush and madly tick off animal sightings. There’s plenty of
game to be viewed from your strategically placed hammock.
All activity is geared to your timescales, not the camp’s. No
one will care if you even make it outside the camp gates before the
day of your departure. Relax, snooze, sunbathe, daydream and be
pampered all day long in the most tranquil and breathtaking of
settings. And for those seeking an intimate bush experience,
'sleep-out' excursions under the stars can be arranged. As English
owner Bernardo Smith so rightly says, Garonga is a “safari
for the soul”.

Highs
- The outdoor bush bath - relax up to your neck in softly scented bubbles, listening to the sounds of Africa, while watching the sun set on yet another perfect day
- The aromatherapy sessions offered in the open-air sala are bliss
- The food is seriously delicious
- The staff are excellent, Garonga safari guides have a comprehensive knowledge of the area and the wildlife
- The palatial half-tented suites have private decks and indoor/outdoor showers
Lows
- Garonga is all about relaxation and not racing around for the Big 5; however the game experience has vastly improved over the years
- In winter, when it gets very chilly on nighttime game drives, it's essential to bring a fleece/jumper and warm jacket
- Guests would ideally stay for a full week to really soak up the benefits Garonga can provide - unfortunately the cost limits most to 2 or 3 nights. With this in mind, it’s an excellent place to tag on to the end of a longer trip as a treat before returning home
- Ganronga closes throughout March
Garonga's tented rooms are made for love, with huge draped beds, outdoor showers and swinging hammocks...
