Holl Cottage

Reykjavik, Iceland

Charmingly restored 19th century cottage sleeping 2-6 in the centre of Reykjavik

Situated in the heart of Reykjavik, Hóll cottage gives you a taste of traditional 19th century Iceland with a contemporary twist. You’ll find limed pine floors, three cosy bedrooms, a steep winding staircase, wood burning stoves and a mix of antique and modern furniture. Built in 1895, the cottage is full of character, very well equipped and has more space than you might expect from the outside. The owners, Paul and Sigga, who spent three years restoring the house, own a kitchen shop in town, hence the fine Sabatier knives, Bridgewater crockery and Smeg oven.

Whilst central, the cottage is peaceful and exudes an air of calm. It's well located for Reykjavik's nightlife and provides a good base for exploring the rest of the country. Paul can arrange privately guided trips to the Golden Circle, fishing, glaciers, waterfalls, bird watching and more. Ideal for families or a couple seeking space, local character and independence.

Highs

  • Well-equipped with all mod cons and starter hamper
  • Cosy cottage feel yet deceptively spacious with large living area
  • Charming garden for sitting out in summer
  • Attention to detail makes it homely and gives a real sense of place: woolly Icelandic slippers by your bed, old photographs, interesting local literature and artwork
  • Convenient central location: Reykjavik's restaurants, shops and harbour are just a stroll away.

Lows

  • Unusual accommodation layout on three floors with only one tiny shower room on the lower ground floor - not ideal for larger groups.
  • The bedrooms are small (and one of the narrow twin beds is really only suitable for children) but cosy nonetheless
  • Reykjavik’s volcanic heating system can whiff a bit but you soon get used to it
  • Steep narrow staircase could be a challenge for the young or uncoordinated.

A Hansel and Gretel cute house dating back to 1895...
