Hope Springs

Desert Hot Springs, California, USA

Rejuve! An adults-only retreat offering space, serenity and spring-fed geothermal pools, just 20 minutes from Palm Springs

The original Cactus Ranch sign outside is a testament to authentically restored mid-century Hope Springs Resort’s roots as a 1950s motel. In a world gone mad for gadgets and glam, Hope Springs is life peeled back to its essence: no TVs or telephones or fancy room service. Luxury is a long soak in the satiny, mineral-rich water that bubbles up from the Mission Creek Aquifer to fill three pools (two hot and one warm). And maybe an aromatherapy salt glow to slough off the layers of 21st-century stress.

The lobby is a stunning A-frame with a wall of windows overlooking the pool. An authentic restoration preserved mid-century features such as Formica countertops and floors, now garnished by period-perfect moulded plastic rocking chairs, fake fur rugs and buttoned-cushion sun loungers by the pool. Simplicity rules: minimalist white bedrooms, organic teas and fresh fruits, quiet. With its mid-century modern bones and menu of sense-stimulating massages, wraps and salt rubs, Hope Springs feels like exclusive spa without the pretension. Yes, there’s WiFi, but your iPhone is not welcome poolside. The laidback vibe invites you to make yourself at home. Brew a cup of organic tea in the lobby kitchen. Watch the sunset turn the San Jacinto Mountains and Coachella Valley lavender from the back patio. Turn in early. Enjoy an indulgent weekend of spa treatments and pool time, or a whole week with a little hiking or shopping on the side. This restorative retreat will make you feel like you’ve really been away.

Highs

  • A great alternative to the typical Palm Springs experience; off-the-beaten path, yet within easy reach of great shops and nightlife
  • Hiking in Joshua Tree National Park, famed for its other-worldly geological formations
  • Crystal-clear mineral-rich water directly from a natural aquifer; great for soaking tired muscles, boosting your metabolism and quenching your thirst (its great taste has won international awards)
  • Snazzy mid-century modern architecture; authentic 1950s furnishings
  • Adults only; the peace is part of the pampering

Lows

  • The laidback, early-to-bed vibe (no noisy pool jets after 10 pm!) and fend-for-yourself minimalism may be too low key for some
  • Likewise, the 'unplugged' ethos; if you must have room service or go into withdrawals without a TV, book elsewhere
  • Only one massage bed; schedule early
  • Only breakfast available

a celebration of the mid-century modern aesthetic, 20 minutes from Palm Springs...
