Hotel Cocoon

Salvador, Brazil

Rooms

The 27 rooms, spread over 2 floors, come in 3 categories - the Diamond Master Suites, then Crystal and Luxe rooms. Diamonds have a bath and a shower, the Crystals have a shower only, and the Luxes are the same as Crystal but with a 'garden' view ('garden' looking suspiciously like 'car park' to me).

My room (number 12, a Crystal) was large and, in keeping with the rest of the hotel, a homage to minimalism in concrete, including the bed frame which I continually managed to bang my leg on. However, the mattress was incredibly comfy, as were the soft white sheets, and I liked the vibrant orange curtains covering the sliding glass entrance doors. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, a safe, a minibar and a nifty-switch which, like an instant iPod, pumps in chilled, vibey tunes. You can access WiFi in your room (at a daily charge), or there's a computer to check emails (free) on the top corridor.

Cleverly, a large floor-to-ceiling mirror at the far end of the room slides one way to reveal the minibar and safe, or the other way to uncover the entrance to the bathroom. This has a sink, a toilet and a large walk-in shower with a glass roof to allow star gazing, (good in theory, although with light pollution from neighbouring buildings, not so effective in practice).

All in all I thought my room was super-stylish, and liked it even more once I'd stopped cracking my knee on the end of the concrete bed every time I went past. One downer was that I could hear next door's TV quite clearly, but fortunately they turned it off early.

Save to favouritesPrintMailHotel CocoonI must admit this hotel, which opened in 2006, came as a shock to me. Not so much the starkness of the concrete contrasting with the vibrant orange curtains and citrus uniforms of the staff. Nor was it the feeling that I was staying in a futuristic version of a 1950s American motel. Not even being addressed as an astronaut in keeping with the owner's spaceship theme. To be honest, it was the fact that this incredibly modern design marvel was bang in the middle of a dusty middle-class suburb - complete with an Esso garage - with a half-finished building next door and a busy road 100 yards away. Never judge a book by its cover though. By the time I left, this place had really, really grown on me. Staff are friendly, it has a fantastic (if small) pool and it's a 5-minute walk to one of the best beaches in town (Praia da Jaguaribe) where you can drink fresh coconut juice and try surfing or kite-surfing. And, as I came to realise, you get a more authentic slice of Brazilian life, away from the city's touristy parts, whilst staying in a really unique building. First impressions aren't always binding.
