Hotel Du Clos

Le Rouret, Côte d'Azur, France

Rooms

Rooms are split between the main house and the Bergerie (converted barn). All are beautiful, so it doesn’t really matter where you end up, though some have baths, some have showers and some have both; if you have a preference, make this clear when booking. You get uncluttered French elegance, beautiful fabrics, crisp white linen and excellent beds. All rooms have garden views, air conditioning, flat-screen TVs and fancy bathrooms with robes to pad about in. Also, your bed will be turned down when you come back from supper.

Four Standard Rooms in the main house have a clipped feel. Two interconnect, while those in the eaves feel a little smaller due to lower ceilings. You might get painted beams, a wall or two of colour, shiny wood floors or a small tub armchair. We stayed in one of these rooms and liked it immensely.

Those in the converted barn tend to be quite airy. They are very close to the main house, you’re not the poor relation here; on the contrary, these rooms are very popular. Those on the ground floor are smaller than those above, but they open onto a lawned terrace with tables and chairs scattered about in the shade of olive trees (good for people who want to avoid steps). Inside, the same easy elegance spreads itself from wall to wall: light colours, super beds dressed in white linen, perhaps a padded pink bedhead or an apple-green bedside table. Rooms above are bigger; two have private balconies shaded by bougainvillea, one has a fireplace, another has a daybed and a feather boa lampshade.

Finally, there are 2 Junior Suites, one in the Main House, one in the Bergerie. We saw the latter, a big room with a huge contemporary free-standing bath hiding behind a screen. If you want to splash out, this is where you do so (quite literally). There’s a walk-in shower, too, a leather sleigh bed and French windows onto a lawned terrace.

First came the [i!http://www.i-escape.com/hotel.php?section=eating&hotel_key=FR073!restaurant], then the Michelin star, finally a small hotel to accommodate those who didn’t want to leave. It’s a tale of two buildings, with the restaurant sitting next to the church and the hotel basking on the edge of the village. A 3-minute stroll connects the two and those who come find beautiful interiors, excellent service and super value for money. The hotel itself – a newly renovated 17th-century farmhouse – comes in an elegant contemporary French style. You get olive trees scattered across sweeping lawns, a shaded terrace for breakfast and sundowners, a boules pitch tucked away in one corner, sun loungers circling the pool. Uncluttered [r:FR073:rooms] are warmly chic. They’re split between the main house (slightly smaller) and a converted barn (several with terraces). All have a sense of calm, fancy bathrooms, beautiful linen and excellent beds. Some guests linger, others head off to explore. The pretty market towns of Biot and Valbonne are on your doorstep. Nice, Antibes and Cannes are close.
