Hotel El Patio

Garachico, Tenerife

Facilities

  • The pool is delightful and well-equipped. There are loungers and parasols, a tiny sauna, jacuzzi and a small sheltered gym. The terrace is bordered by smart banana trees. You're hidden from the world, mountains tower behind. A very relaxing spot.

  • The hotel has a few sporty distractions. There’s a tennis court (ask at reception for racquets and balls), a croquet pitch and a golf net in which to practice your swing.

  • Don’t miss the garden. You’ll find lemon trees, a herb garden, an orange grove and masses of colour. A full-time gardener looks after it all.

  • The old bodega is now a very relaxed honesty bar, so help yourself. It’s a lovely room, nice and big, with lots of old family heirlooms lying around for no good reason. The guest book sits on an old school desk, ancient tennis racquets hang on the wall. You’ll find a couple of old dressers, one of which was ‘removed’ from the church. Inside, old stone walls cool; outside, tables and chairs are scattered about and tall palms soar. There’s colour everywhere (hanging ferns, bougainvillea). Follow your nose up to the tennis court and you’ll discover a terrace where you can watch the sun set.

Save to favouritesPrintMailHotel El PatioThe de Ponte’s carry some weight in Garachico – they’ve been here since 1507. They built their own church in 1565, then ruled the island from 1608. This is their land down by the sea, and the dragon tree that stands in the courtyard is 400 years old. These days they run a banana plantation. It’s all around you, with signed footpaths to guide you through it. You plunge off the main road, pass the small church, then roll down towards the ocean. The hotel is a curious mix of styles. 100-year-old palms soar in an ancient courtyard, a sparkling pool lazes out back with sublime views up the mountain. Inside, the 26 [r:CI004:rooms] are simple, homely, airy, spotless. Don’t expect designer chic; do expect cast-iron beds, floral bedcovers, colourful walls and terracotta-tiled floors. Rooms are split between the manor house, the winery and the stables. Some are half a mile up the lane in a pretty annex, offering total peace and quiet. Don’t miss the old garden, the lemon trees, the hanging ferns, the purple bougainvillea, the tennis court, the croquet pitch. Baltasar rules with a rod of pure sponge. Wonderful.
