Hotel El Patio

Garachico, Tenerife

Press Reviews

The Guardian, April 2008
"This 16th-century manor house is in the middle of a 60-acre banana plantation, overlooking the Atlantic in the unspoilt northwest of the island. It is the ancestral home of Tenerife's poshest family, and even has its own church (as well as a sheltered pool, tennis court and croquet pitch). Most rooms have some combination of iron bedsteads, terracotta floors and oak-beamed ceilings, and breakfast is a feast of Dionysian proportions. Stroll in the beautiful gardens, dine on local dishes in the restaurant and inspect family heirlooms in the homely honesty bar. There are more restaurants in Garachico, and excursions include the nearby cliffside village of Masca, and volcanic Mount Teide with its weird, lunar landscapes."

  • “Lovely peaceful well run hotel in beautiful gardens in the middle of a banana plantation - great service and very clean and comfortable. Pool and surroundings excellent. Muy bien!”

  • “Communal grounds are beautiful with lots of hideaway places to chill out. Our 200 yr old premium room was sympathetically restored. Breakfast was ok, although coffee was undrinkable (chlorine water is my guess, need a filter). We ended up boiling our bottled water at the honesty bar to make a passable drink. Dinner food was bland, no use of any local herbs or spices. Arriving with luggage was a struggle as path from the car park is cobbled. Thanks for playing local music at breakfast!”

  • “Beautiful location, but not a suitable hotel for a week with a toddler, mainly due to lack of restaurant in the evening. It felt much more like a big b&b than a hotel.”
    Ann, United Kingdom (10.03.12)

  • “This hotel was a perfect place for a relaxing break. We arrived quite late and we were able to arrange a late dinner by contacting the owners directly. The hotel and grounds are beautiful and immaculately well kept. The pool is heated and there is a tennis court with some spectacular sea views. The only downside is that dinner is only offered 1 or 2 nights a week, and the breakfast lacks variety.”
    Alison, United Kingdom (07.01.12)

  • “This is a very relaxing place which has the atmosphere of a well-established family run plantation with lovely gardens and a very peaceful atmosphere. The outdoor pool and jacuzzi area is very tasteful and the self-service bar is a further example of the non-commercial style. Most of the rooms are in the main complex which centres on the traditional farm buildings - the rooms away from this complex were down a farm road and looked rather cut off from the main complex. The office has very good local information.”

  • “We had a lovely stay, it is a peaceful and relaxing place and there is plenty of things to do/places to visit in Tenerife.

In July, during low season, it is difficult to find good restaurants that are open. After few days we found that hotel El Roque in Garachico (1km away) has a really good restaurant with a daily, 3-course set menu (EUR 26 pp) from Tuesday till Sunday. It would be really great if El Patio had a restaurant on site.

We also went to one of the local festivals in Garachico which was great fun, lots of dancing and music and people who are generous and friendly. Overall we had a wonderful stay at El Patio and we would highly recommend to anybody who needs a breather from all the bustle.”
    Beata, United Kingdom (01.08.11)

  • “A beautiful location, very well cared for. El Patio has wonderful shrubs and flowers in bloom. Very relaxing courtyard. Elena is a charming lady who went out of her way to accommodate our needs and provide information and advice. Her staff were also helpful. I will certainly recommend El Patio to our friends.
On the downside the cooked breakfasts were not great - eggs overcooked and bacon undercooked! Plenty of good restaurants nearby, though not many veggie options.”
    Elizabeth, United Kingdom (30.03.11)

  • “Amazing place. Lovely location and wonderful staff. We stayed in the annex rooms which were in the middle of the plantation and we loved the remoteness and peace. If I was to be very picky I would say the annex rooms are a little bit dark but the location, views and communal sitting room more than made up for it. A wonderful place and we would love to return one day.”
    Shahraz, United Kingdom (01.01.11)

  • “The only thing the hotel lacked was a good restaurant for an evening meal - otherwise excellent.”

Save to favouritesPrintMailHotel El PatioThe de Ponte’s carry some weight in Garachico – they’ve been here since 1507. They built their own church in 1565, then ruled the island from 1608. This is their land down by the sea, and the dragon tree that stands in the courtyard is 400 years old. These days they run a banana plantation. It’s all around you, with signed footpaths to guide you through it. You plunge off the main road, pass the small church, then roll down towards the ocean. The hotel is a curious mix of styles. 100-year-old palms soar in an ancient courtyard, a sparkling pool lazes out back with sublime views up the mountain. Inside, the 26 [r:CI004:rooms] are simple, homely, airy, spotless. Don’t expect designer chic; do expect cast-iron beds, floral bedcovers, colourful walls and terracotta-tiled floors. Rooms are split between the manor house, the winery and the stables. Some are half a mile up the lane in a pretty annex, offering total peace and quiet. Don’t miss the old garden, the lemon trees, the hanging ferns, the purple bougainvillea, the tennis court, the croquet pitch. Baltasar rules with a rod of pure sponge. Wonderful.
