Rooms

Bedrooms are lavish. Some are bigger than others, but all come fully loaded. You get enormous beds, beautiful colours, the odd antique, and smartly upholstered sofas and armchairs. The 4 at the front look out to sea; those at the back overlook the pool and the hill beyond. Three have small balconies. In all you’ll find plush fabrics, crisp linen, contemporary art and good lighting. This is a small hotel that revels in serious elegance and nowhere is this more evident than in the bedrooms.

One room (Jaizkibel) has painted panelling, another (Zarautz) has a sink built into a mantelpiece. Throw your eyes across any room and they will land on something lovely, be it an armchair in a vast bathroom or swathes of fabric flowing from a four-poster bed. Several rooms have high ceilings with painted beams. The suites are huge, but so are some of the less expensive doubles. As for the bathrooms, expect the best. All are different and all are sumptuous, with walk-in showers and double-ended baths; some (Orio, Askizu, Jaizkibel and Zarautz) are open-plan, with no door separating them from the bedroom. Jaizkibel has a lovely tub for 2 that looks out to sea.

Save to favouritesPrintMailHotel IturregiIt’s hard to fault this small hotel. It sits in the hills above the pretty coastal town of Getaria, with views across vineyards to the sea beyond. It’s a very private place. You potter up the hill, turn onto a track, then wait for electric gates to swing open. When you arrive, you find an old Basque farmhouse reborn as an English country house. This is a total renovation, no expense spared, a house filled with beautiful things. It’s contemporary in design, yet traditional in spirit. Bedrooms are sublime, as are the staff. Everywhere you go, windows frame the view. There’s a lovely sitting room that opens onto a covered terrace where vast sofas wait. You’re in 20 acres of peace with gardens that roll off towards private woods. Climb some steps to one side and you find a gorgeous swimming pool with loungers under parasols and lavender in the flowerbeds. Back inside, the breakfast room opens onto a sun-trapping terrace, not a bad spot to start your day. Upstairs, 8 beautiful [rooms:SP089:rooms and suites] pamper you rotten. Some have sea views, others overlook the pool, and all have gorgeous bathrooms.
