When to go?

Rio is a fabulous city all year round. Come in February or over New Year if you want to be around for Carnaval and the biggest parties; if not, these times are best avoided as prices soar and Rio is packed. July to September are the coolest months but also the driest.

Author's tips

Bring a sarong, sunglasses and sunscreen. Buy your bikini and flip-flops in Rio - they're far cooler and far cheaper than you'll find at home. A light rain mac is a must in Rio - short downpours can occur at any time. There's no need for books - there's too much to look at.

Save to favouritesPrintMailHotel PortinariNot sure whether to stay in Copacabana or Ipanema? Hotel Portinari captures the best of both worlds. Situated half way between these 2 legendary beaches, it's named after Brazil's famous Modernist painter, Candido Portinari, and is a work of art in its own right. Ten of Brazil's top architects and designers were invited to bring their unique creativity to different parts of the hotel, from the lobby bar to the rooftop restaurant. Each of the 11 floors was assigned a different architect, including Gilmar Peres and Marcia Muller. Result: 66 [r:BR002:rooms] and suites ranging from soothing, contemporary and minimalist to colourful, tropical or traditional. Wherever you are in the hotel the different styles will reach you, whether it be the spa mosaics, the specially commissioned black and white stills of Rio, or the staff's funky uniforms. When it first opened, this hotel managed to break the mould. Today it still wins its place as one of a kind.
