Hotel Portinari

Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro

Rooms

With 66 rooms spread over 11 floors - each level created by a different Brazilian architect - you'll be spoilt for choice. As you leave the lift on each floor, you'll begin to appreciate the style that the designer has chosen. You'll come across interesting touches before you even reach your room, such as a giant illuminated number eight for the 8th floor or funky room numbers set into the marble floor on the 3rd.

Designs differ from the traditional to the minimalist, so try to request a particular floor to suit your taste. All rooms have the usual mod cons as well as welcome extras such as bathrobes and slippers. All have a shower only (no bathtub; as is the case in most Brazilian hotels). Each floor has an Executive Suite and a Junior Suite - larger than the standard Deluxe Rooms but decorated in the same style. In our view it's worth paying the extra. All suites come with DVD players and some Executive Suites have a Jacuzzi or sauna too. All rooms overlook the street and some traffic noise can be heard, but then again you don't come to Rio for peace and quiet!

Save to favouritesPrintMailHotel PortinariNot sure whether to stay in Copacabana or Ipanema? Hotel Portinari captures the best of both worlds. Situated half way between these 2 legendary beaches, it's named after Brazil's famous Modernist painter, Candido Portinari, and is a work of art in its own right. Ten of Brazil's top architects and designers were invited to bring their unique creativity to different parts of the hotel, from the lobby bar to the rooftop restaurant. Each of the 11 floors was assigned a different architect, including Gilmar Peres and Marcia Muller. Result: 66 [r:BR002:rooms] and suites ranging from soothing, contemporary and minimalist to colourful, tropical or traditional. Wherever you are in the hotel the different styles will reach you, whether it be the spa mosaics, the specially commissioned black and white stills of Rio, or the staff's funky uniforms. When it first opened, this hotel managed to break the mould. Today it still wins its place as one of a kind.
