Hotel Rural Las Calas
Vega de San Mateo, Gran Canaria
A charming small country hotel in the beautiful mountains of Gran Canaria - great for walkers.
Nestled high in the heart of Gran Canaria’s rugged mountains
is the tiny hamlet of La Lechuza, and here you will find Hotel
Rural Las Calas – once a 17th century manor house, now a cosy
country inn. Renovated in 1999, the inn is a comfortable mix of
traditional Spanish furnishing and African flair, with
rooms built around a verdant central garden. Your
neighbours are the productive farmers of this rich agricultural
region – the weekend market at the nearby village of La Vega
de San Mateo will be filled with their juicy peaches, pears and
fresh-picked greens. Fill your basket, then head to one of the many
picnic/barbeque spots that offer terrific views, including the
spectacular sweep of the Tejeda Basin.
Nature lovers will be pleased to know the the hotel is located
close to the protected areas of the Cumbre and Pino Santo, rich in
ecosystems and birdlife. Sporty types are well-placed for hiking,
mountain-bike and horse-riding excursions.

Highs
- Peaceful hilltop location and a rural hideway from the island's touristy resorts
- Near Gran Canaria's best-kept secret, the Las Cumbres Natural Park, filled with protected birds and wildlife
- Home-made Canarian cooking using local produce, although don't expect fancy cuisine
Lows
- A bit isolated (no nightlife) and 20km from nearest beach; the immediate surroundings outside the property are not inspiring
- Guests' cars have to drive right by the pool to park so it can be noisy when people are coming and going
- Magui the owner does not speak any English, although there is a receptionist who does (she was on holiday when we were there)
