Ibrik Resort by the River

Bangkok, Thailand

Eating

Food service is limited to breakfast (included in the room rates) and a small counter offering cakes, pastries and a selection of beverages, though guestrooms are all equipped with fridges/minibars.

Upon check-in, you'll be asked to fill out a form to select your breakfast for the next morning (fresh fruits, sausage/ham, eggs, toast, fruit juices, coffee or tea) which can be taken in bed, on your balcony (my recommendation) or in the café. The coffee is especially delicious, made strong Italian-style, and the fresh fruit plate is a delight. The main terrace is accessible to all guests via a house entrance at the top of the stairs, and also makes for a great place to enjoy an evening glass of wine or beer while watching the boats go by.

Happily, Ibrik sits next to Supatra River House, one of the best Thai restaurants in the city. Next-door Patravadi Theatre also has a chicer-than-thou restaurant and café, Studio 9: order a bottle of white wine and watch the sun set over the river. It must be one of Bangkok’s funkiest pads for drinks, lunch or dinner. On Friday and Saturday nights you can pop in for eccentric dinner-theatre and watch an eclectic mix of local performers trying out new stuff as you eat. Also recommended is the nearby Rum Ruay Café, a hip coffeehouse with a good atmosphere and free WiFi - great for an afternoon tea to rest up from sightseeing.

Save to favouritesPrintMailIbrik Resort by the RiverOn the banks of the olde-worlde Thonburi side of Bangkok, Ibrik River (as opposed to Ibrik City) is not an easy hotel to find. It's tucked between the Patravadi Theatre's Studio 9 eatery, and a townhouse which I initially thought was the hotel. But, once you've found the small white gate, darted down the narrow path into a little garden and entered the demure café/lobby, you realise that you’ve stumbled upon a rather special, idiosyncratic hidey-home in Bangkok’s most Bohemian spot. One of the first boutique properties to open in Bangkok in 2004, this petite gem - white, clean-lined and filled with dappled light and breeze - is a triumph of understatement: polished concrete floors, contemporary bathrooms and grandma’s attic furniture. Only 3 [r:TH029:guestrooms] means privacy and quiet, and the staff are incredibly polite and helpful. This little spot is like a home away from home in sprawling, bustling Bangkok, and a welcome respite at the end of a long day of sightseeing.
