KAYAK CHILE - CAMPO TRES MONJAS - REVIEW

If you are an experienced kayaker or adventurous first-timer looking for pristine wild waters amid some of the world’s most stunning scenery, then look no further. Virtually unknown until the early 1990s, the Rio Futaleufu (known as the “Fu”), whose azure waters plunge through the spectacular Andes mountains to the Pacific Ocean, is now considered one of the greatest whitewater rivers on earth.

Former Olympic kayaker and Fu pioneer Chris Spelius offers a variety of exhilarating 1-2 week kayak trips based at his unique Campo Tres Monjas in southern Chile. Specialist guides lead beginners and experts alike through playful Class II/III runs to thundering Class V gorges. Accommodation is tented but creature comforts have not been forgotten. Non-paddling friends and family are welcome too – there’s wonderful hiking, horse riding, mountain biking right from the camp.

HIGHS

  • The stunning setting on the River 'Fu'
  • Making it through those rapids, then easing aching muscles with a sauna, massage and hot shower among the rocks
  • Excellent drying-out facilities, a chef to prepare wholesome food (the Campo even has its own organic greenhouse), a white sand beach and protected rock pool for relaxation
  LOWS

  • Not for the fainthearted – the Fu is a big and powerful river
  • Beginners might want to consider the instructional courses or the rafting trips
  • Getting there – it's very remote (accessible only by boat) and a long haul from Europe, but worth the effort
  • Tents with outdoor shower/toilets are the only accommodation option
