Kivotos Hotel
Mykonos, Greece
Fabulously indulgent palazzo and beach reef refuge for legendary living on a beautiful party island
Gently rolling down to the emerald waters and pebbly beach reef of
Ornos Bay, Kivotos Hotel salutes guests and onlookers alike from
its privileged position on the peninsula. Just 10 minutes from
Mykonos town, with a tame taxi and airport limo service operating
literally all hours, it is an exclusive haven pleasingly far from
the crowds, yet just moments from the fun.
Despite its 5-star style (and prices), it's very much a family-run
place, with the two charming sons in constant attendance. Homely
with private art, luxurious in the detail, refreshingly non-chain,
this is a quirky haven, epitomised by the pedigree pet chickens
which roam the property. It is also an institution, with THE guest
list to match. Fellow pool-siders at the Sunday barbeque included
Mr Costes, 'take it easy' Stelios and Jean Paul Gaultier on my
visit, and since then they have hosted Shakira, George Michael and
various big name footballers. There's plenty of chic and a hint of
bling, but certainly no logo louts or absurdly loud Russians.
Testoterone-fuelled bartenders come from London or New York (last
one was the Sanderson) and the chat is friendly, almost house
party. But the lonely or faint-hearted need not be: the family and
Kojak-lookalike manager make a point of mingling.

Highs
- Private pebble beach and water access (very rare on Mykonos)
- Proudly family run with furnishings to match and very personal service (guests are greeted by name, and returners are invariably recognised)
- Excellent hideaway nooks for serious chilling
- Astonishing range of facilities: spa, billiards, squash court and no fewer than 3 pools - with pre-chilled towels served poolside on very hot days!
- Some suites come with private outdoor jacuzzis and plunge pools
- One of the best locations on Mykonos
Lows
- Such exclusivity does not come cheap – be prepared
- Eclectic décor means you really have to ask about each room prior to booking
- It is classical rather than contemporary, with a quirky art and furniture collection - not for modern design junkies
- It is NOT in central Mykonos town, so shopping, partying and local dining require taxis or a rented quad bike
- The beach is pebbly - bring waterproof shoes to really enjoy swimming and snorkelling
- It is on 3 levels, so be prepared to walk up and down many stairs, and often!
An intimate, elegant hotel; a multi-tiered enclave of Greek Orthodox white-and-blue tumbling down a rocky hillside...
