Frommer's
The best place to stay and dine is La Fructuosa in the center of Gaucin. Its bedrooms are simply but comfortably furnished, each with a tiled bathroom with tub and shower. The hotel restaurant, serving meals for 18€, is open only Wednesday to Saturday 8 to 10pm. The style of cooking is typically Andalusian, and portions are generous.

Conde Nast Traveller
"La Fructuosa... decorated in a distinctive mix of Spanish retro and modernism and with roomy balconies offering views across to Africa."

Los Angeles Times
"At night, as we dined, a swirl of stars rose over the mountains behind Gaucin. I ate a first course of oranges, olives and red cabbage drenched in a local olive oil so green, it seemed to have been pressed that afternoon; next came a delicious fresh goat cheese grilled with rosemary. The squid entree was too chewy, but the dessert, a surprisingly fruity avocado mousse, was divine. And so was the view down the steep valley, so clear I could see the 22 miles to the coast."

  • “We thoroughly enjoyed La Fructuosa and Gaucin. A quiet location for good walks. The Bull run on Easter Sunday was an experience, though not for the squeemish.”

  • “La Fructosa is a wonderful place to stay -- our room was huge, comfortable, and tastefully decorated. Everything about the accommodation was thoughtful and beautiful, including fresh-cut flowers. Pillar met us when we arrived and showed us around the hotel, from the terrace on the top level to the library/lounge and restaurant below -- the views on every level and from our room were amazing. Our only regret was that we weren't staying longer! Highly recommended!!”

  • “Beautiful hotel with stunning rooms and amazing roof terrace. Staff were really really friendly. Would definitely return.”
    Louise, United Kingdom (20.09.11)

  • “We loved this place, fantastic, but such a pity restaurant is only open on Friday and Saturday nights as we could not eat there during our stay. Other places in town were variable...Only complaint was a lack of pillows - one titchy one each, not enough for reading in bed in comfort. We could not find spares anywhere.”
    Lucy, United Kingdom (03.08.11)

  • “A truly wonderful hideaway. It's a calm and good atmosphere - in the village of Gaucin, its neighboring villages, the area around and especially at La Fructuosa. The food is also great, most of all the Friday & Saturday dinner. Also, the hospitality of Jesus and Luis was impeccable, as were the smiles on the faces of all the rest of the staff. We would definitely go back.
The only crack in the record was the (temporary?) dog yard a few houses down from La Fructuosa. The dogs seemed to have a late evening barking contest - every evening - which at times made it hard to sleep.
    Overall, though, a wonderful place.”

  • “Charming place with charming owners. The view from the bedroom was absolutely stunning.”

Save to favouritesPrintMailLa FructuosaGaucin residents know that for great food and a convivial atmosphere Restaurant La Fructuosa is the place to go. Since it opened, it's become a firm favourite with locals for long lazy Sunday lunches and romantic starlight dinners on its beautiful terrace. The cuisine is authentic Spanish and Mediterranean; the views of the distant coast are fabulous. Jesus Balsa and Luis Ruiberriz, the owners, created this wonderful restaurant and small hotel from an old ramshackle village house. The old wine cellar was transformed into a cosy restaurant where paintings and sculptures by local artists adorn the walls, and the original chestnut beams and wine press remain as prominent features. Then they added 5 imaginatively-decorated [r:SP010:bedrooms], most with Jacuzzi bathtubs. It makes an ideal destination for relaxing, walking in the mountains and exploring Andalucia's "pueblos blancos" (the white hilltop towns).
