Le Castel

Cotentin peninsula, Normandy, France

Facilities

  • Dining: Breakfast is served daily, and sumptuous 5-course feasts are prepared for dinner (more informal suppers can be arranged on request). Hot and cold drinks are on offer in the kitchen, and an honesty trolley is available for guests at all times of the day or night
  • Communal areas: The 1930s-style sitting/dining room has a white baby grand piano, an Edwardian walnut dining table, and an Art Deco-style woodburner. The chateau is set in 4 acres of parkland and gardens
  • Internet Access: A computer with internet access is at guests’ disposal; there’s also free WiFi
  • Swimming Pool: There's a 5.5m above-ground pool (not heated), available from June to mid September.
  • Spa Treatments: Not available
  • Recreational: Bikes are available for exploring the beautiful rolling countryside around Le Castel, and there's a TV and a comprehensive set of board games in the sitting room. There's also croquet on the lawn in front of the house: locals may find it quirky, but apparently the game was invented in Normandy.

During summer a Camelot style marquee is turned into a huge play zone with 65 square metres of soft play area and lots of toys aimed at 0 to 8 year olds.
There are also two large trampolines.
  • Weddings and Celebrations: This is a beautiful venue for a wedding, a celebration or a house party. The entire chateau can be rented on a catered or self-catering basis for up to 17 people (13 adults, 2 children and 2 babies) and Jon can assist with arrangements
  • Disabled Access: None
  • Pets: Welcome by prior arrangement
  • Languages Spoken: English, French and German.

When to go?

Le Castel is open all year, but is at its best between March and November. Avoid August if you don’t want to be disturbed by children playing. Come in the winter for blazing fires and lovely walks; come in summer if you fancy some serious lazing on the terrace.

Save to favouritesPrintMailLe Castel‘Laid back’ and ‘chateau’ aren’t words that always go together in France, but at Le Castel they’re effortlessly fused. English owner Jon, who gave up a London flat and a high-flying Fleet Street job to move here, is the perfect host, running the Napoleon III chateau like one long house party. The mansion, in 4 acres of parkland, started life as a hideaway for the mistress of a Parisian socialite and, as you twist your way here along country lanes, you can see why. But once you find it, the fun begins. Aperitifs are served on leather sofas by a roaring fire, and a 5-course candlelit dinner is set outside on the terrace or beside the baby grand piano. In your antique-furnished bedroom - named with a smidgeon of irony after figures like Napoleon and Josephine - the only sound likely to disturb your slumber is the owls. There are generally plenty of other guests to fraternise with, but if not you’ll enjoy Jon's easy company and the beautiful surroundings.
