REVIEWS
Conde Nast Traveler (US), Gold List 2011
"The family-owned and-operated lodge occupies 10,000 "absolutely beautiful" acres. Thatched-roof rooms in hues of maize, burnt orange, pale green, sky blue, gold, and ivory "are huge and bright." Outside, on the Sabie River, "animals always wander down to the water for a drink." Traditional boma dinners centered around a bonfire come with "the constant calls of hyenas, elephants, and hippos. It's mind-blowing.""

Conde Nast Traveler (US), Gold List 2009
"Built on the banks of the Sabie River, this property comprising two lodges and a family camp has "outstanding food and service." Rooms with fireplaces, plunge pools, and large tubs overlook the river and are "modern with every conceivable amenity." Take breakfast on the wooden decks or in the bush after a morning game drive with "trackers and guides that are so knowledgeable." The spa offers Vichy shower treatments."

Travel + Leisure
"Settle into your River Lodge suite outfitted in Old African style, then take advantage of what's included: late-night astronomy sessions, guided full-moon walks, and lamplit dinners in the bush. Only one lucky couple per night can experience the landscape in an outdoor bed elevated above the veld and draped in mosquito netting. From there, instead of sheep, you can (safely) count animal eyes reflecting red in the moonlight."

Save to favouritesPrintMailLion Sands River LodgeLion Sands Private Game Reserve lies at the southern end of the vast Sabi Sands Reserve. This lodge and its twin [h:SA080:Ivory Lodge] are unique in that they alone have direct access to the mighty Sabie River, which has some of the world’s most spectacular game viewing along its sandy banks. Book a few nights here and you are guaranteed the safari experience of a lifetime. Nick and Rob More, whose great-grandfather bought Lion Sands in the 1930s, have given the lodge a complete makeover, and it now numbers amongst South Africa's most delectable camps. The decked, open-fronted lodge looks out across sandy reed beds to the river, with 20 [r:SA077:guest suites] fanning out to either side. The décor is Afro-colonial chic at its spectacular best, the food is as good as you'll get anywhere in the country, and the expertise of its rangers and trackers means that not only will you get to see masses of game, but you'll learn a whole lot about the bush too.
