Matemwe Beach Village

Matemwe, Zanzibar

Press Reviews

Sunday Times Travel Magazine, July 2005
"Asali Beach Hut - the name hardly does it justice. A 'love-nest for a love fest' would be a better description. Set apart from the other thatched bungalows at Zanzibar's Matemwe Beach village, Asali is right on the white-sand beach. In fact, the vast double bed has been raised so you can see the sea while lounging with your lover. A plunge pool sits in the middle of the open-plan living area - handy for cooling off should things get too steamy on the Moroccan-style divan."

  • “The rooms were definitely a bit tired - think a coat of paint would go a long way. Grounds were very pretty and immaculately maintained and the food was delicious.”

  • “I just loved the attention to detail and most especially the bedtime fable! Very, very easy place to relax. Watch out for falling coconuts!
My only query might be to simlify the food a little. With such great natural fish etc to have it simply grilled rather than with too many sauces etc would have been nice, but I guess that might be personal preference.”
    Seonaid, United Kingdom (12.03.11)

  • “This was an excellent place to simply kick back and relax for a few days before safari. The pool was a big attraction.”
    Linda, United States (20.02.11)

  • “The room was very comfortable and I loved the little touches that were made eg lighting our mosquito coil at night and kikois and hats provided.
The food was amazing, not a bad meal in 3 Service was also amazing all so friendly
I thought it was a little bit on the expensive side for the room size and the state of the bathroom (needed fixing up a bit)
Had a wonderful time and cannot complain about anything.”
    Paula, United Kingdom (14.09.10)

  • “Beautiful understated resort on an amazing beach. We had dinner on the beach one evening for my partners birthday. The service was fantastic and the backdrop was breath taking. The chef had even made a huge personalised birthday cake! We would love to stay here again.”

Save to favouritesPrintMailMatemwe Beach VillageMatemwe Beach Village – or MBV as it would no doubt be known if it had any pretensions of grandeur (thankfully, it doesn't) – attracts a variety of people. Young travellers on a budget come because it’s the best accommodation and food you can find on Zanzibar for these prices. Keen divers come because the dive school, One Ocean, was the island’s first 5-star PADI centre and maintains its excellent reputation. Romancers come for the gorgeous honeymoon suite, with its stylish circular design, its jacuzzi and its almost private stretch of beach. And sun-lovers of all backgrounds come to soak up the rays on its near-deserted, palm-fringed beach. With such diverse guests, it’s no surprise that the atmosphere is lively and sociable. In the evening, travel stories and card games are exchanged over a beer at the open-sided sitting area. By day, you can cruise across the lagoon on the hotel’s dhow, reading, chatting or snorkelling. There’s something for everyone to do (or not to do). And, if you happen to be a young, honeymooning, sun-loving diver on a budget, then it couldn’t be better!
