OVERVIEW

Magnificently perched on an isolated headland between two long beaches, Saman Villas is one of Sri Lanka's most luxurious small hotels. Its collection of villa suites, dining and living areas, lush gardens and infinity-edge pool are well-positioned to give stunning views of the Indian Ocean. As well as sparkling interior waterfalls and quiet reading rooms, the hotel features a snooker room, gym, badminton court and in-room CD players, cleverly mixing Western facilities with Sri Lankan charm.

A specialty here is their package catering to weddings - staff can organise everything from the dress to champagne to as many elephants as you might require! The recently opened Sahana Spa offers twice-weekly yoga and aromatherapy which can be enjoyed in a beautiful water garden setting. An excellent choice for couples seeking total relaxation, unspoilt surroundings and the facilities of a hotel, somewhere between a small, intimate guest lodge and a large beach resort.

ROOMS

The 27 rooms are set out in two-storey villa houses each with a Superior Suite upstairs and a larger Deluxe Suite at ground level. All boast fine coastal views and are similarly decorated in a clean, airy traditional Sri Lankan style with teak floors, bamboo furnishings and white washed walls. You'll find a veranda overlooking the sea and inside, a spacious open-plan layout with a sitting area and a slightly raised sleeping platform with a wooden bed and handmade quilt. Bathrooms are semi-open air but with Western comforts: hot water, big baths, separate showers, built-in hairdryers and light up make-up mirrors. This is Sri Lankan luxury for those who prefer their accommodation Westernised - aircon, minibar, TV and CD/DVD player are standard features.

The two-storey Saman Villa Suite (with the bedroom located upstairs) and some of the Deluxe Suites have their own 22-foot long private swimming pools.

EATING

The hotel's main restaurant offers a 4-course dinner menu of the day and an extensive a la carte featuring everything from scrambled eggs to chili sambal. The smaller terrace restaurant by the pool is perfect for breakfast and lunch when you feel like nibbling but don't want to over eat. In high season, weekly barbeque nights are also available. There's 24 hour room service and guests can have the luxury of being served personally on their own balcony. Note that all meals, including breakfast, are charged as extra to the room rate. The hotel's location means it's a rickshaw or taxi ride into Bentota if you want to eat out.

There are three bars - the Pool Bar overlooking the pool and ocean, the open-air Sunset Bar on the top floor with magnificent views over the coast and central hills, and the air-conditioned Library Bar with a snooker table and wide selection of books.

ACTIVITIES

Located a few miles south of the tourist resort of Bentota, Saman Villas is in a quiet, unspoilt location with long surf-swept golden beaches either side backed by coconut plantations. Don't come expecting action-packed days - this is somewhere to unwind.

Borrow a CD from the hotel's private collection and dance in your room until dawn
Join the entertainers - from dancers to singers � who perform on certain nights in the main living area
Take a trip into nearby Bentota and visit its ancient Buddhist Temples
Visit the nearby Turtle Hatchery where visitors are encouraged to released baby turtles into the seas as part of a conservation program

Although there is evening entertainment most nights, the atmosphere is quiet and exclusive - the nearest main town is 3 miles away so party animals should not apply!
The beaches are great for a stroll, but not ideal for swimming due to the undercurrents.
The hotel will be closed for 3 weeks from 1 June 2009 in order to make some improvements.
