Orloff Resort

Spetses, Greece

Press Reviews

Conde Nast Traveller (UK), March 2011
"A 19th-century shipping magnate's home, converted into two private villas and a minimalist mini hotel."

Conde Nast Traveller (UK)
"Although popular with wealthy Athenians for weekend breaks, Spetses had a shortage of classy places to stay before this boutique hotel opened in 2004. Orloff Resort has 22 bedrooms and studios in five whitewashed houses with wooden shutters and tiled roofs, built around a courtyard with basil plants and olive trees. Poolside designer deckchairs and lime-green sails shading the pool-bar hint at the confidently contemporary interiors behind the traditional Greek facades: the sunny, all-white bedrooms feature scarlet or yellow lamps and beside tables made from tree trunks. All have big bathrooms with grey marble showers; some have whirlpool baths. Broadband Internet access, satellite TV and air-conditioning are standard. Breakfast is served as late as you like and there's a massage therapist on hand. Owner Christos Orloff makes every guest feel like an old friend and he will arrange anything from a babysitter to room service from his restaurant, or even a boat trip if you tire of the nearby sandy bay of Agia Marina. Cars are banned on Spetses (although mopeds are annoyingly popular), but wandering the lemon-scented lanes and pine-fringed hills is blissful.

Frommer's
"This glitzy resort, built in 1975 and totally renovated in 2004, occupies the land and some of the buildings of the 1865 Orloff estate. It's a kilometer out of town by the beach, and has its own pool as well as great extras such as tennis and an exercise room. The restaurant is good, too. This would be a great place to spend a relaxing week on Spetses. It's popular with Greek families, many of whom return year after year."

  • “The room was a bit small and balcony looked out over houses and waste land so not particularly attractive view, but the bathroom made up for it in part and the common areas ( pool and courtyard were lovely and well designed). The communal breakfast area was a bit small particulalry at the weekend when the hotel was full. The breakfast was very good, althoough as a small point, it would have been a nice attention to detail to have fresh honey (rather than individual catering pack pots) and perhaps local figs which were in season rather than other non local fruit. Anyway, these were small points and overall we enjoyed it very much.
The Orloff restaurant which is in the old port was very good and also their cocktail bar also owned by the hotel owner was very good.”

  • “Resort was overall nice. I liked the minimalist style, and clean simple rooms. We had a room on the 1st floor so had very nice views of the island.
There were a lot more kids than we expected. If you are a couple looking for some peace and quiet, it might not be for you in July and August! The pool area got very noisy early on.
In our room the small refrigerator that did not really cool anything.
Our shower didn't drain properly, and despite speaking to the front desk several times, this continued to be an issue throughout our stay.
My biggest complaint was with housekeeping. My boyfriend and I wanted to have lazy mornings relaxing and catching up on sleep - and despite having the 'do not disturb' sign on, housekeeping would start knocking on the door every 10 minutes. I found this incredibly annoying when you are trying to have a relaxing vacation.”

Save to favouritesPrintMailOrloff ResortSpetses is truly the 'island of aromas': lemon trees dot the pebbled lanes, pine forests scent the hills and the old harbour is awash with the tang of salt water, fresh paint and seafood. But one thing you won't smell is fumes: there are only a handful of cars on the island; most visitors get about by horse-drawn buggy or bicycle. No surprise, then, that the Athenians flock here at weekends - it's 2 hours by hydrofoil from Piraeus. Set close to the old harbour, the Orloff is a rare breath of contemporary chic. Hidden within the stone-walled grounds of a 19th century family mansion, its whitewashed buildings cluster round a large pool, with pebbled paths and designer deckchairs shaded by ancient olive trees. [r:GR047:Inside], cool white walls are brightened by scarlet or ochre cushions, gnarled iron lamps and bedside tables carved from tree trunks. Take a friend or partner and spend a glorious week lazing by the pool, cycling round the island and indulging in delicious Greek food and hospitality.
