Social Responsibility

Phantom Forest supports Kynsa Animal Welfare. Their intention is to work for the benefit of animals found mostly in underprivileged areas. The organisation acts and speaks for those without a voice and rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes where possible. Education programmes and daily clinics are also organised.

When to go?

The South African summer (November to March) is prime time, but nature-lovers might have more to spot in October-November, or perhaps in autumn (February-April).

Author's tips

Bring binoculars, long-sleeved clothing (in natural colours) and swimwear for the pool or the 'Bubble Barrel'.

We suggest a 2- or 3-night stay, as part of a Garden Route tour. They periodically have some superb 2-night deals including gourmet dinner. Outdoors enthusiasts and twitchers might be happy staying longer than 3 days, but for most of us the novelty will wear off, and you might wish you were somewhere more accessible.

Save to favouritesPrintMailPhantom ForestBungy-jumping, sailing, surfing, canoeing, kloofing… anyone touring South Africa’s Garden Route would think that terra firma had gone out of fashion. If so, then Phantom Forest is the place to be seen (or not seen, given its camouflage), for here you sleep in a [r:SA027:wooden house] perched halfway up to the jungle canopy. Thanks to tall stilts and huge windows, you can sit face to face with a Knysna woodpecker in the comfort of an armchair or bathtub. Bathtub? Up a tree? Oh yes, just because this is the monkeyzone, don’t think it has to be primitive. Fully-equipped bathroom, spacious sitting area, sumptuous double bed - it’s all there, thanks to the ingenious design and décor of Kit Stewart, who still runs the reserve today. You’ll even find a Jacuzzi, a massage area and 2 gourmet restaurants, situated along elevated walkways. Not to mention a freshwater pool with views over the lagoons of Knysna. Tarzan never had it so good!
