Westover Hall
Milford-on-Sea, Lymington, Hampshire
Eating
Westover Hall is almost as well-known for its AA two rosette
restaurant as it is for the building itself. Apart from the
taste, what we appreciate most is owner's David and Christine's
commitment to using as much local produce as possible. The back of
the menus list all the local suppliers they use (it's a long
list) and the chef takes full advantage of the seafood that this
part of the coast has to offer. More informal dining is available
in the new (as of January 2009) Vista Bistro, with an a la
carte menu, and if you opt for dinner, bed & breakfast rates
then you'll be eating here. Starters range from hand-dived scallops
with braised salsify to Severn and Wye smoked salmon, and for
mains, confit leg of duck on smoked sausage and curly kale and
whole sea bream stuffed with herbs.
Breakfast is as you would expect for a hotel of this
standard; selection of fruit, freshly baked croissants, cereals,
meat, smoked salmon and an excellent cooked breakfast of your
choice. There's also fresh juice and as many cappucinos or
espressos as you like.
The lunch time offer is particularly good value. Two courses
and a glass of house wine (there's a whole page of house wines to
choose from) for £15 per person. For dinner you can
expect sauteed calamari with lime and poached egg, wild seabass
with fresh haricot bean fricassee and red mullet with ratatouille.
Dinner is a three course meal for £40 per head, with several
dishes in each course, to choose from.
You should book for the restaurant, for both lunch and dinner, as
its also very popular with locals and tourists staying elsewhere.
The panelled dining room has an upmarket and intimate feel, and for
the ultimate dining experience, ask for the private dining room on
the first floor; large enough for about 10 people, it has an
amazing view, particularly on summer evenings as the sunset casts
ever-changing light on the impressive Needles.
