When a journalist claimed that The Sun House's main bedroom was
"one of the most beautiful rooms in the world", she wasn't far
wrong. This British owners of this small hotel joke that they worry
about the expectations of any guest who reads this accolade, but
they have nothing to fear: The Sun House represents true modern-day
luxury with an old-style feel. Set in the hills above historic
Galle town, with a pool and airy living areas, you'll find total
peace and relaxation.
Built in the 1860s by a Scottish spice merchant, The Sun House was
voted by Conde Nast as one of the Top 21 Hotels for the 21st
Century. Since then the owners have also opened The Dutch
House next door with its stunning infinity pool. With their
proximity to Galle (one of Sri Lanka's most atmospheric towns),
these white-porticoed colonial gems are a perfect base for
exploring the south coast – a haven for romantic couples and
solace seekers wanting something different.

Highs
- The beautiful bedrooms offer inspiring views, especially the vast and lovely Cinnamon Suite with its balcony
- Large windows and open plan living areas allow gentle breezes to waft the scent of frangipani throughout the house
- Delicious food is served in the elegant dining area
- The feel is one of romance and homeliness throughout
Lows
- There nearest beach is 5km away, although transport can be arranged by the hotel and there is a small pool for lazing in the sun
- The atmosphere is quite bohemian – it's not for those expecting slick hotel style and staffing
- If you're coming with a car and driver, there's no accommodation on site for the driver
- Like many places in Sri Lanka, mosquitoes can be a problem – make sure you bring plenty of repellent
The Sun House feels more like a private residence than a luxury hotel...
