Ortega has created a series of spaces that are both soothing and stimulating. He opted for a soft palette of cool pastel shades for walls, ceilings and carpets, which provides an understated backdrop for more colourful, jazzy decorative elements: 70s-style lamps, unusual plastic drum tables, bright stripey cushions, repros of Pop Art classics by Warhol and Lichtenstein and chairs covered in pastel suedes that match the bed wall colours. Black-and-white block-mounted photos of 19th century Madrid pay lip service to the building's past, whilst bathrooms, with dark slate floors, top-end tappery and gleaming stainless steel fittings take you back to the 21st. Some rooms have slate-mounted sinks within the bedroom and most have both bath and separate shower.

All gadgetry in the bedrooms is top spec. Flat plasma TVs take on a secondary role as constantly-changing framed pictures, whilst mirrored headboards framed in beech shelving reflect the natural light which streams in through the high window openings. Double-glazing and electronically operated blinds keep the room quiet and dark at night so you'll sleep well. Wardrobes, where you’ll find the mini-bar, safe, bathrobes and masses of hanging space, have been slotted in according to the layout of the individual rooms.

The ‘fab’ factor is upped another notch in the two highbrow Duplex Suites at the very top of the hotel. Each has its own private sun terrace giving onto the square and a corner plunge pool. The rooms have Ortega’s signature pastel colours jazzed up with beautiful objets. The bathrooms are glass-fronted so that from your tub, wrapped round by cool panels of dark slate, you get a direct view down to the square. Three Junior Suites also have fabulous views of Plaza de Santa Ana from the bathtub as well as the bedroom, and a small lounge area leading off from the bedroom; two Executive Rooms have views from their small private terraces.
