Read's Hotel
Santa Maria, Mallorca
Family-run country house hotel with fabulous cuisine and a pampering new spa
Read's was the dream of Vivien Read who sold his English law
practice to spend 7 years restoring a dilapidated 500-year-old
manor house. Now it's a luxurious country-house hotel with bags of
character and wonderful views of the surrounding countryside.
Fantasy murals of Greek gods and display cases crammed with
Victorian curios (reflecting his wife Iris' passion for antiques)
give it a unique and homely feel. This is a family affair - one of
the Reads is always at hand - and their son, Marcus, runs the
exceptional restaurant. Guests are welcomed royally - hire car and
luggage are whisked away and recuperation begins with a cool glass
of champagne in the bar. Accolades include membership of the
prestigious Relais & Chateaux group.
It's the perfect place for a restful and romantic escape, as
tempting in winter as in summer, with indoor and outdoor pools,
bikes, tennis and an exciting new Vespasian spa. Golf courses and
Palma's shops are not far away.

Highs
- The food: the restaurant, Bacchus, is arguably one of the best on the island (plus there's the less formal The Blues, the new Chef's Table and cooking classes on offer)
- Beautiful old manor house surrounded by manicured lawns, vineyards and almond orchards
- One of Mallorca's most luxurious hotels with a range of facilities normally only associated with larger places
- The spa and indoor pool make it a good option in cooler months
- Well placed for exploring the island and making quick trips into Palma
Lows
- July and August get pretty hot, but thankfully all rooms are air-conditioned
- There's no beach nearby, but there is a lovely big outdoor pool
- If you are looking for nightlife or restaurants beyond the hotel, you will have to drive - Palma is 15 minutes away. Hiring a car is strongly recommended
- No children - though a bonus for those seeking total peace and quiet
24-hour room service, dining at a gourmet restaurant, all wrapped up with a spa on site...
