The relaxed formality of the Relais is clearly seen in the design of the 9 bedrooms. Large and private, the striped and floral-patterned accent fabrics in yellows and reds offset the white walls and polished wood floors, echoing the furnishings of the living room. Delightful details include gilt sconces, ornate mirrors, antique furniture and old family prints. Spacious inbuilt cupboards, kingsize or twin beds, a table with kettle and hot drinks, bowls of fabric flowers, good soundproofing and air-con make them very liveable. Deft touches include a cupboard thoughtfully stocked with half bottles of local wine, a minibar, safe, satellite TV and a map of Firenze.

Of the deluxe rooms, most are doubles (No 1 is a twin) and one has space for an extra bed. Nos 6 & 7 share a terracotta patio with table and chairs. No 9, is the most romantic with a private garden. Honeymooners are offered champagne, a fruit basket and a romantic dinner. Of the two larger junior suites, No 8 can sleep a family of four at a pinch as it has two sofa chairs; No 2 has a larger living space.

The sparkling white ensuite bathrooms are immaculate and decently sized, with twin basins in Carrara-marble surround, a separate toilet, hairdryer, thick towels and nice Italian soaps.
