Riad Noga
Marrakech, Morocco
Hard to find, hard to leave: a beautiful riad at the edge of Marrakech’s old city (9 rooms)
Take a pair of historic riads, gut them, refurbish them with
Moroccan objets d'art, mix with local labourers, coat in
‘tadlakt’ glazing, add a pool and what have you got?
The Riad Noga.
A dream recipe indeed, but German owner Gabriele Noack-Spaeth has
managed to produce a simply delicious result. The combination of
Marrakech exotica (palm trees, vaulted ceilings, handcrafted doors,
resident parrot) and European efficiency (not the case in all
riads) makes it a safe and comfortable choice. By connecting 3
adjacent houses, they have found space for a lovely courtyard in
one and a small pool in the other. The only hiccough may be
locating the riad down a small alley; but once inside, just immerse
in cool water and cook slowly on the roof terrace.
Those with a larger appetite, incidentally, can rent the whole
house (sleeping 14) along with its 9 well-trained staff.

Highs
- A tightly-run efficiency and a host of relaxing features come as welcome relief after the chaos of the city
- The pool, though small, is very refreshing, and a rarity among Marrakech riads
- Gaby, her staff and the pets make you feel quite at home
Lows
- Like most riads, it lacks some privacy
- Some bedrooms are on the small side
- Not for those seeking a totally laid-back atmosphere
- It gets booked early, and there's a (preferred) 3-night minimum stay
