Secret Garden
Unawatuna, Sri Lanka
A basic but charming villa and 2 bungalows (sleeping 2-14), set in a leafy paradise across the road from Unawatuna beach
As you walk through the gate to the Secret Garden, you feel like
you’ve stumbled on one of Unawatuna’s best-kept
secrets. Hidden behind a white-washed stone wall, you’ll find
an old colonial villa and 2 small
bungalows
set in an acre of lush tropical garden. It’s a basic yet
idyllic retreat, filled with antiques and far removed from the
hustle and bustle of Unawatuna, yet within easy reach of its golden
sand and clear turquoise water.
The main villa is ideal for a large family or group of friends on a
budget (it sleeps 6-10). The Tao suite (which sleeps 2-4) is
perfect for a couple or small family, while the double-bedded
bungalows will suit independent travellers. Children of all ages
are welcome and will love the animal life in the garden, with
monkeys high in the trees, a pet tortoise and monitor lizards by
the stream. Delicious meals can be provided by the staff and
breakfast starts with fresh papaya, pineapple, avocado and banana
salad, served with a twist of lime. Excellent yoga and meditation
classes can also be arranged in the domed pavilion in the garden,
along with massages and Ayurvedic therapies.

Highs
- It’s a peaceful and calm retreat
- The dome is a perfect place for meditation, yoga or some quiet time out of the sun
- The animal life is varied and close-by – we spotted two types of monkey, a mongoose, squirrels, lizards and plenty of fireflies
- The garden is filled with bougainvillea, palms and papaya trees
Lows
- There's no pool, although the sea is just across the road
- The mosquitoes can be a problem – unfortunately the idyllic wildlife and trickling stream brings them out at dusk. Bring repellent!
- There's no air conditioning in the rooms, although fans are provided
- All extras (including drinking water) are charged at an additional cost
- There can be some noise from the nearby road
Staff who are charming, attentive and delightfully informal and some of the best food I have enjoyed in Sri Lanka...
