Shutters on the Beach
Santa Monica, Los Angeles, California
Laidback-luxe resort hotel on Santa Monica’s promenade with ocean-facing pool deck, two restaurants and a spa
During the 1920s and 1930s, fashionable resorts and charming
bougainvillea-covered bungalows bloomed along the Santa Monica
'Gold Coast,' a sublime stretch of Pacific coastline west of the
big city. Shutters on the Beach blends the best of both.
Tucked into the promenade with historic Santa Monica Pier in sight,
the rambling seaside hotel looks more like a residence than a
resort. Individual rooms feel like private bungalows with
low ceilings, dark wood plank floors and bright-white shuttered
doors that slide back to let in fresh sea breezes. If you’re
lucky, you’ll have a lavish view of white-tipped waves
curling neatly onto acres of perfectly groomed sand. If not, head
for the expansive, tiered pool deck, where rows of cushioned sun
loungers line up facing the main event. Expect the casual elegance
of a friend’s home - a discerning friend with an in-house
spa, first-rate chef and master sommelier and round-the-clock room
service. Whether you love resort-style pampering or kick-back
comfort, life at the beach doesn’t get much better.

Highs
- On the beach with views you’ll never tire of - from your room or suite or the vast pool deck; right on the Promenade, an easy walk to the Pier
- Treatments designed by Ole Henriksen (facialist to the stars) or tap the 'Hopes and Dreams' button on your phone for activity options
- Special programmes and services: free yoga on the beach; signature beach-style apparel, gifts and furnishings you can take home
- Friendly staff; unpretentious atmosphere
- Multiple venues for intimate to lavish events; on-site event planning and catering
Lows
- With 186 rooms and 12 suites, it stretches the limits of 'boutique'; it’s easy to get lost in a warren of hallways
- Rooms are snug, balconies downright tiny; some experience traffic noise
- Not every room has sublime views; head for the pool deck, lobby or two oceanfront restaurants if yours doesn't
- Small spa but you can use the spa in Casa Del Mar (just next door)
- Additional fees quickly add up: valet parking, internet access, hefty telephone surcharges, breakfast not included; “Beach and Bath” wall-mounted shop feels a bit mercenary
