Itineraries

1 WEEK
It would be possible to combine a few days sightseeing in the north, with the rest of the week spent lazing on the beaches in the south west.

Either drive or take the scenic train from Colombo to Kandy. Make this your base for a couple of days and from here you could make a day trip north to the spectacular rock fortress at Sigiriya and/or south to the cool hill country.

You could then take the train from Kandy back to Colombo and continue down the south coast to one of the lovely beaches. Or if driving, head directly south through the Hill Country and down to the southern coastal plain.

Otherwise, you may just want to spend the whole week on the southern coast - apart from beaches there's also the historical town of Galle and some interesting temples.

2 WEEKS
You should be able to see a fair amount of the island in 14-16 days. Depending on your interests, you could spend more time in Kandy seeing the ancient sites to the north or go walking in the hill country, discover waterfalls and stay on a tea plantation.

The more adventurous could also fit in a jungle/safari trip on the way down from the highlands to the south coast and finish by relaxing on the beaches of the south west before heading back up the coast to Colombo.

Alternatively, if you want total relaxation you could spend most of the time based on the southern coast and spend just a few days on a safari/jungle adventure or visiting the southern Hill Country.
