Why go? Sleepy, laid back and largely unspoilt, these islands reflect all that is beautiful and gracious about the Caribbean. St Kitts, is the larger island, with volcanic peaks, covered in lush tropical forests, and vast fields of sugar cane which run to the shore. Just two miles away, Nevis may be smaller but it's beautifully edged with white sand beaches. Unique to the islands are the historic plantation houses elegantly restored to create some of the most romantic hotels in the Caribbean, with dinners served on candlelit verandas, hammocks for afternoon naps, and tropical gardens to wander in. Well-heeled sorts come for the unhurried way of life and old colonial charm. St Kitts and Nevis are the islands to relax on and escape the crowds. Any Downsides? The islands are small and nightlife tends to be contained within the hotel or plantation inn. They may just be too quiet for some. Popular with couples, singles looking for action should go elsewhere. Accommodation, eating out and getting around are expensive. Parts of St Kitts have been set aside for resort development, so go now! |
