Sunset Beach
Shelter Island, New York State
Summer-only hipster-hangout or peaceful mid-week getaway in tastefully converted motel with bags of charm just a few hours from NYC
Even if you’ve never set foot on Long Island or weekended in
the Hamptons, this shoreline’s reputation might lead you to
imagine it peppered with affluent homes and trendy eateries. But
while there’s no shortage of luxury seafront property,
there’s a bewildering lack of restaurants and bars with ocean
views.
So it’s no surprise that since hip hotelier André
Balazs (owner of LA’s Chateau Marmont) spruced up
one of the area’s rundown sixties beachfront motels, every
other Manhattenite and their dog has flocked here on boats and
ferries to seek out Sunset Beach on previously semi-secret Shelter
Island, 8,000 acres of land and marsh floating between Long
Island’s two forks. Reading ‘romantic seaside
hideaway’ in their good-enough-to-eat, retro-styled publicity
material, you might expect a tranquil affair. And during the week
you’re likely to find peace, your own terrace, a quiet
taverna, a laidback bar and free bikes for exploring the island.
But pitch up here at the weekend, and make sure you’re up for
a party. You’ll be welcomed by a sun-kissed congregation of
rosé-swilling hipsters seeking sun, showiness and stunning
sunset views.

Highs
- Dinner, drinks and cocktails on four levels all with ‘sunset’ bay views
- Late-night crowd, DJ, firepit and party vibe at weekends
- Petanque court, free bicycles and beach beds reserved for hotel guests
- Exquisite ‘National Park’ island setting – just the business for weekend escapes from the heat of New York City summers
- Fabulous design that covers most of the flaws of the old motel beneath
Lows
- Light sleepers won't welcome the party crowd; sound carries and rooms have thin walls
- Its crowded scene can result in slow (albeit flawlessly friendly) service; residents can struggle to get in the car park
- With all the thrills of the beach in the air, it’s noticeably lacking a swimming pool
- Considering this is former motel, prices can feel steep
It feels more like St Tropez than part of eastern Long Island...
