Talalla Retreat
Near Tangalla, Sri Lanka
Serene, laid-back hotel on a pristine and undeveloped beach with some yoga retreats
This relaxed retreat sits in glorious lush grounds just beside the
secluded crescent of Talalla Beach. Here, calm turquoise seas meet
golden sands on a beautiful stretch of coast; compelling sunsets
and sunrises come as standard. This is the perfect place to get
away from it all, without breaking the bank.
The Australian owners have worked hard to create an informal hotel
of elegant simplicity. The 8 villas, which each house 4
open-sided rooms, are set in 4 acres of landscaped garden with a
large sparkling pool. The emphasis is on stilling your mind,
soothing your soul and invigorating your body. There are occasional
yoga, tai chi and guided meditation programmes, while the spa keeps
most non-participating guests more than happy. Outside the retreat
are some of Sri Lanka's best beaches, jungles and wildlife parks;
also within striking distance are dozens of temples and the
historic town of Galle. All in all, this is a great option for
sociable solo travellers and friendly families, though honeymooners
and light sleepers might want to look elsewhere.

Highs
- The retreat is set in a prime seaside location beside one of Sri Lanka’s most undiscovered and sheltered beaches
- The grounds are beautiful and tranquil (no traffic noise), and the rooms are airy
- Occasional yoga, tai chi and meditation courses are run in the spacious pavilion; daily drop-in yoga classes and private tuition are also usually available
- There is a 20m swimming pool for the (rare) occasions when the beach is too rough
- The good quality restaurant serves fresh, unfussy fare (though there isn't a huge variety)
Lows
- The local staff, though friendly, can be inefficient, which is bewildering when you first arrive
- There are few mod cons: no in-room entertainment, phone or air conditioning, but there are ceiling fans and internet/phone at reception
- The open plan means there is little privacy and makes any barking dogs (and there are plenty) or noisy neighbours very audible
- It's not for anyone who's squeamish about insect life, due to the open-air bathrooms and open upstairs rooms
- The location is remote (4+ hours from Colombo) and there are no shops or restaurants within walking distance
Stunning location set in its own grounds with two storey villas, central open-sided eating area, swimming pool and huge yoga platform...
