Tankardstown

Press Reviews

Conde Nast Traveller (UK), April 2009
"Versatility is the word that best sums up this large country house with stables converted into seven cottages (five with two double bedrooms and separate kitchen, two with one double bedroom and an open-plan kitchen). The owner is Trish Conroy, who runs the place with husband Brian and has furnished the cottages with antique furniture, duck-down pillows, Egyptian cotton, state-of-the-art power showers and plasma TVs. Until recently they lived in the main house, hence the family feel; but they have now made this available for rent. It has six bedrooms and large reception rooms, and is surrounded by lawns, raised flower beds, mature trees and a tennis court. A full Irish or continental breakfast can be brought out to the cottages (the continental comes in a wicker basket), catering is provided in the main house."

Hidden Ireland
"Less than an hour from Dublin, just above the valley of the River Boyne, Tankardstown House is sheltered by a tall tree-covered hill and surrounded by its own walled park... Inside, there is a fine series of interconnecting reception rooms on the ground floor while upstairs the bedrooms are large and extremely comfortable, with uninterrupted views over the surrounding countryside and splendid large bathrooms... Outside the park has been restored with new plantings and the vast stable court converted into a series of luxurious self-catering apartments and a fully equipped conference centre."

Irish Times, March 2008
"Sometime in the future, when they look back, historians will surely cluck in wonder at some of the garish hotels built in the most unlikely places in recent years. That's why Tankardstown House, just outside Slane, Co Meath, feels so refreshing. There is no achingly contrived decoration, and the exterior, although recently extended, is sympathetic to the original building... Tankardstown is better suited to small groups than it is to individuals. Apart from the main house, there is a cluster of seven pretty stone cottages, converted from what was once the stable yard. Further bedrooms can be made available in the main house... The dining room in the main house has a magnificent antique table that can seat about 24 people. After dinner, guests can use the drawing room or the bar. The house is approached from a winding drive through grounds that include a walled garden, which is to be restored presently."

Lucinda O'Sullivan's Little Black Book of Great Places to Stay
"This is a one of a kind special events venue. It offers total privacy, discretion and gracious estate living to the discerning guest - all tailored to suit you....Tankardstown is different - a world of stylish luxury."

Irish Independent, February 2008
"If you're looking for a dreamy country house to hold a private party or a family reunion. Tankardstown House is as unique as you'll find. Sheltered by a tree-covered hill and surrounded by a walled garden, this late Georgian cut-stone mansion has been thoroughly restored. Equally lovely is the cluster of seven stone cottages that surround the house, also available for hire. They come with power showers, plasma TVs and well-stocked mini bars."

Save to favouritesPrintMailTankardstownIt was all because of the 2006 Ryder Cup. Patricia and Brian Conroy had returned to Ireland in 2002 after several years in Hampshire, and spent 4 years resurrecting the Georgian mansion from complete disrepair. It was all set to be their dream home, combining lavish fabrics and modern bathrooms with antique furniture and family heirlooms. But word spread round the county of Trish's flair for stylish design and thoughtful detail. Then the Ryder Cup scout rang up, offering 'silly money' to rent the property for the golf tournament. While on her inspection she saw the unmodernised stable block beside the house, and proposed to throw that into the mix, if it could be refurbished in time. Six whirlwind months later, the Conroys moved out for a week and 24 Texans moved in. It was such a success that they offered B&B accommodation in their 7 stable block [r:IR009:cottages] from then on, adding a bistro and restaurant as their reputation grew. And at the beginning of 2008 they moved out of the [r:IR009:main house] permanently, making it available on an exclusive basis for weddings, parties and events.
